PERFORMANCE
THROUGH COLLABORATION
When company founder Paschal McCloskey emigrated from Northern Ireland to Canada in the early 1980s, he took a job building conveyors. It was a challenging time to be starting a career, for companies were dealing with the height of a recession. Then a deal to build trommel screeners fell through at the company where McCloskey worked. That is when he decided to start manufacturing trommel screeners himself. Soon after that turning point, McCloskey International was born.
Today, the industries McCloskey International serves – including aggregates, landscaping, infrastructure and road building, construction and demolition, mining, waste management and recycling – are as diverse as the lineup of portable screening and crushing equipment it manufactures. The company’s customers are uncompromising when it comes to the power, durability and after-sale support they expect from those products.
To meet these high standards, McCloskey uses Cat® industrial engines for its custom designed products. Caterpillar offers real-world-tested power packages with varying outputs and drives that are required by McCloskey’s customers. These engines also help the company meet emission standards around the world – including U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emission standards in the U.S., Canada, Japan and South Korea, as well as the even more stringent EU Stage V standards that went into effect in January 2019.
Currently, McCloskey’s crushers, vibrating screeners, trommels and stacking conveyors are powered by multiple big engines that are built to last. These powerful workhorses include the Cat C2.2, C3.4, C4.4, C7.1, C9.3B and C13 engines, which are available in models ranging from 42 hp (31 kW) to 520 hp (388 kW).
In order to integrate Cat industrial engines into its products, McCloskey’s design team works alongside engineers at Cat dealer Finning to develop build specifications suited to the needs of each piece of equipment. They also visit Caterpillar facilities to meet with industrial-engine designers about future product requirements. This close collaboration allows McCloskey’s engineers to acquire valuable information and gain insights into Caterpillar’s latest engine designs and aftertreatment systems.
“Caterpillar has a good reputation worldwide and is a well-known brand among our international customers. The company provides aftersales support, line-side support and technical support, along with worldwide spare-parts availability and backup service for our customers,” says Stephen Broderick, Design Engineer with McCloskey.
Throughout the engineering and design process, Finning’s sales and application engineering teams also stay in close contact with McCloskey to ensure questions are answered, issues are resolved quickly and processes run smoothly. The dealer’s technical expertise, including 3D models and installation guides, as well as an engine sign-off at the close of each project, help ensure a quality end product.
As a result of its collaboration with Caterpillar and Finning, McCloskey is able to offer its customers hydraulic- and clutch-driven systems that deliver clean, reliable power, along with worldwide spare parts and service availability that keep downtime to a minimum. Both are key in helping the company continue to build its global reputation for providing innovative, high-performance products.
