In late 1997, European legislation began implementing emissions regulations for nonroad mobile machinery. These regulations are applicable to prime or standby power mobile generator sets and other nonroad equipment, including drill rigs, construction wheel loaders, bulldozers, highway excavators, forklift trucks, aerial lifts, and mobile cranes. Over time, the regulations have become progressively stricter in an effort to further reduce harmful engine exhaust substances, including carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, particulate matter (PM), and nitrogen oxides. The standards have advanced from the initial Stage I to today’s Stage V, which is also known as EU Regulation 2016/1628.
In 2021, Caterpillar introduced a new range of mobile generator sets certified for EU Stage V emission standards for nonroad mobile machinery designed to provide customers with a strategy to reduce costs and complexities. The first available model was a 200 kVA Cat® C7.1 powered generator followed by a 310 kVA Cat C9.3B powered generator set, with additional models released in 2022.
Caterpillar is well-versed in the evolving European emission standards and has guided our mobile generator set customers through every phase of these regulations. This new range of Cat mobile generator sets will be fully designed and tested by Caterpillar and will use proven technology to ensure simple, reliable operation.

Learn MoreThe XQP550 generator set is EU Stage V emission standard capable. A unique feature is the introduction of clutch fan drive technology where the fan no longer needs to run continually at full speed and power. This saves additional fuel, while lowering noise output; an ideal feature when operating at lower loads, in cooler temperatures and, most importantly, in evenings when noise levels are most noticeable.
