Giant 3.0 Sweeper
Sävsjö, Sweden
Cat® C2.8 U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final /
EU Stage V Engine
Picture a highway cutting through the Middle Eastern desert, with a never-ending quantity of sand blowing onto the pavement and distracting drivers. Now imagine a Scandinavian road in early spring, with every vehicle kicking up rock laid down the previous winter for traction, damaging tyres and windshields. What if there was a machine that could clean up surfaces like these in vastly different climates — and everywhere in between — quickly and efficiently?
Thanks to Sweden’s ABL Construction, now there is: a heavy-duty mechanical elevator trailer sweeping machine called the Giant 3.0. Pulled behind a truck, it contains a sweeper that gathers up sand, rock and other debris and powerful brushes that clean the road surface. Three strong belts pull materials up an open elevator shaft, so no rock or sand gets stuck, and shoots it into the back of the truck.
Although it’s not a new concept, several features make the Giant 3.0 stand tall amongst other sweepers. First is capacity: It can load 1.2 tons of material a minute right into the truck that pulls it, so operators can clear roadways rapidly and work for hours without stopping. Second is speed: With highway transport capability of 80 km/hour (49 mph) — twice that of other sweepers — the Giant 3.0 moves quickly between jobs. Third is size: Because the sweeper weighs nearly 800 kilograms (1,764 pounds) less than other sweepers, products, it’s easier to transport and requires less fuel to pull behind a truck. Combine all that with a powerful Cat® C2.8 industrial engine and the Giant 3.0 delivers advantages other sweepers can only strive to match.
Established in 1960, ABL Construction has a long history of manufacturing tools for the construction and forestry industries — including buckets, rippers, hooks, arms, forks and other attachments. But the Giant 3.0 is one of the company’s first diesel-powered products. “We chose the Cat brand, because it’s known for powerful engines, good quality and worldwide service wherever we sell our machines,” says Richard Liljedahl Key Account Manager for ABL Construction.
Small but mighty. ABL Construction approached Cat dealer Zeppelin Sweden with the design for the Giant 3.0, and the two companies worked together to evaluate different engine options — ultimately landing on the C2.8. “It’s a small engine that provides the power needed, and it also has an aftertreatment system that’s easy to work with,” says Liljedahl.
In a tight spot. Compact and simple were priorities for ABL Construction, which wanted to keep the Giant 3.0 lightweight, easy to maintain and user-friendly. “We didn’t have that much space to install the engine, so the C2.8 was a perfect choice for us,” Liljedahl says. “The noise level is also very low, and serviceability is excellent.”
Clean streets everywhere. Another advantage of the C2.8 is flexibility. The engine is available in emissions ratings all the way up to EU Stage V, making it easier for ABL Construction to sell the Giant 3.0 worldwide — from the deserts of the Middle East to the snowy landscapes of Scandinavia. And wherever the new sweeper goes to work, the company is confident in the support that stands behind it. “The global Cat dealer network offers big value to our customers. It’s very easy to find spare parts and service centres closeby, no matter where we are,” Liljedahl says.
