TO ANTARCTICA AND BACK
The Coldest Journey expedition has come to an end; short of its goal, but long on accomplishment.
And two specially-designed Cat D6Ns drove the record-breaking journey for 307 days, pulling cabooses while negotiating the treacherous crevasse fields and blue ice of wintertime Antarctica.
The Cat machines have set a new standard for dependability, operating in temperatures as low as -60 degrees (-51 Celsius). Cat Finning engineer Spencer Smirl says the dozers’ greatest test came after four months hibernation on the Antarctic Plateau.
“Both fired up without incident. Both machines survived the entire trip without a single fault. No leaks, no broken hoses, no system malfunction of any kind,” says Smirl.
And no question that Cat is built to take on any job in any conditions.
