Forsmarks Kraftgrupp AB Selects Caterpillar, Zeppelin Power Systems to Supply Engines for Independent Core Cooling at Nuclear Power Plant

For Worldwide Release: April 17, 2018
Release Number: EEPR0618

PEORIA, IL – Caterpillar Inc. today announced that Forsmarks Kraftgrupp AB has selected Caterpillar and its local Cat® dealer Zeppelin Power Systems to supply six Cat® 3500 Series industrial diesel engines for an emergency cooling system at its Forsmark nuclear power plant in Sweden.

The engines will power custom-made GSG cooling water pumps produced by Sulzer, a specialist in pumping solutions for the nuclear selector. To meet new regulations from the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, the pump packages will be installed as part of an independent core cooling system that would be used in the event of an emergency for the facility’s three reactors. Together, these three reactors produce about 25 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in a typical year, which accounts for approximately one-sixth of all the energy consumed annually in Sweden.

The new system will be installed in stages and qualified for seismic resistance. The work is expected to be complete in 2019.

“Nuclear power provides about 40 percent of all the energy used in Sweden, so it is important to have systems in place that ensure the safe operation of nuclear reactors,” said Patrik Lundgren, project manager for Forsmarks Kraftgrupp AB. “We selected Caterpillar and Zeppelin Power Systems due to their long histories and strong reputations for quality products that perform when they are needed most.”

Located in the region of Uppland on the east coast of Sweden, Forsmark is the newest nuclear power plant in Sweden. Plant operators are investing in improvements to meet increased safety and environmental requirements, prolong the service life of the reactor, and increase power output.

Cat 3500 Series industrial diesel engines offer unsurpassed performance and durability for industrial applications through high power output, proven reliability and excellent fuel efficiency.

Caterpillar is a leader in the power generation marketplace with power systems engineered to deliver unmatched durability, reliability and value. The company offers worldwide product support, with parts and service available globally through the Cat authorized service and dealer network. In addition, dealer service technicians are trained to service every aspect of Cat equipment.
