When Dragon Products of Beaumont, Texas, needed a supplier to provide the engine, transmission and pump for its well service project, it chose Mustang Cat. “It’s a fact that Cat products provide superior longevity in this specific application compared with the competition,” said Tom Inman, general manager at Dragon. “We chose Caterpillar products for their proven quality, durability and dependability. We chose Mustang Cat for its unparalleled product support and service, and the overall greater value it offers.”
Mustang Cat, an authorized Cat dealer that serves 35 counties with 17 branch locations throughout southeast Texas, is the single source supplier for Dragon’s well service project, providing the engine, Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) kit, transmission and pressure pump. With its extensive dealer network, Mustang Cat offers comprehensive parts and service availability, and all factory-packaged components are covered by Caterpillar’s industry-leading one-year parts warranty.
For this well stimulation project, Mustang Cat is providing a Cat® 3512C (HD) SCAC 2500 hp engine, a TH55 transmission with the Cat 2700 hp well stimulation pump. The 3512C engine features Cat’s prototype DGB kit for well stimulation, which allows for maximum substitution of diesel fuel with natural gas during high pressure pumping operations. The DGB kit automatically adjusts to changes in incoming fuel quality and pressure allowing the engine to run on a wide variety of fuels, from associated gas to vaporized LNG and a mixture of diesel and natural gas fuels, with no loss of performance integrity or safety. It provides a significant cost savings by reducing the use of diesel fuel by replacing it with up to 60 percent natural gas.
All Cat products for this application meet EPA Tier 2 emissions regulations as well as those for diesel oxidation catalysts. The engine and transmission have already been delivered to Dragon and are fully operational.
Cat TH55 Transmission
A proven technology used in Cat mining and construction trucks, the Cat TH55 transmission provides superior performance with its deep first gear ratio of 6.16:1. It also offers superior durability and delivers the lowest owning and operating costs with an average life of 7,500 to 12,000 hours at 1,500 bhp. Its state-of-the art well stimulation controls are fully integrated with the engine, which provides exceptional performance to the frac market. The TH55 transmission utilizes advanced Electro-hydraulic Clutch Pressure Controls (EPCP) torsional coupling that minimizes damaging driveline excitation. With its integrated power train, the TH55 transmission is compatible with Cat engine-mounted oil coolers, which enables a single stop for parts and service.
Cat Well Stimulation Pump
The Cat 2700 hp well stimulation pump provides10” stroke triplex power and extreme duty triplex fluid end design benefits. It features high-strength pinion and gear design with a gear ratio of 5.55:1 and a rod loading rate of 275,000 lbs. Its 2700 hp rating offers greater volumetric output at high pressures and reduces pump requirements. Lubrication requirements are similar to conventional power ends, which enables ease of maintenance. Its proprietary metallurgy and unique dimensional design, rigorous autofrettage process and conventional flange-style fluid edges assure frac pump durability. Also, with its extreme duty fluid end that primarily uses standard components, the requirements to stock multiple types of fluid end parts are eliminated. These combined efficiencies lead to lower inventory costs and improved ordering efficiencies.
“We are pleased to have the opportunity to work with Dragon to supply equipment that is high in quality and efficiency to power its well services operations,” said, Mark Reed, general sales manager at Mustang Cat. “As well stimulation continues on its path to becoming a major source of providing fuel products for energy, we look forward to developing similar supplier relationships in the southeast Texas region to provide solutions fueled by Caterpillar.”
