Leveraging 35 years of expertise in hydrogen technologies across multiple end markets, Caterpillar continues to improve the performance of hydrogen-fueled power technologies with minimal impacts on maintenance costs and schedules, availability, and operations.
When it comes to hydrogen fuel, our goals include:
- Continuing to offer engines capable of running on hydrogen blends
- Designing products that can run on 100% hydrogen fuel
- Assisting our customers with navigating the multiple factors that influence hydrogen accessibility (i.e., infrastructure, cost, regulations, storage, policies and incentives, etc.)
- Leading the industry in research on sustainable renewable fuels
35 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE DEVELOPING HYDROGEN TECHNOLOGIES
Caterpillar has over 35 years of experience burning hydrogen in generator sets. Cat® engines sold today have the ability to run on 5 to 10% hydrogen mixtures. Some customized projects have more than 200,000 operating hours running on up to 60% hydrogen blend.
Caterpillar has a deep performance simulation experience, especially on combustion and flame propagation, gained through research on alternative fuels like hydrogen mixtures and 100% hydrogen in reciprocating engines. Testing is currently being performed on single- and multi-cylinder configurations of the CG132, CG170, CG260, G3500, and G3600 A4 platforms.
