53 Cat® Generator Sets Power Gebze-Izmir Motorway Construction
As one of Turkey’s largest build-operate-transfer highway projects, the construction of the Gebze-İzmir motorway is expected to boost the Turkish economy and environment by significantly reducing travel times between various cities.
NÖMAYG A.O, the main construction contractor, required reliable power to produce the approximately 8.6 million tons of asphalt for the project. It also needed spare power for the Osmangazi suspension bridge, which crosses the İzmit Bay, as well as enough energy to power and light road junctions, tunnels, service and parking places, security, maintenance complexes, intelligent traffic systems, and toll collection systems.
During the five years it took to complete the Gebze-İzmir motorway, Cat® dealer Borusan Cat supplied 53 generator sets to power the project.
Generator sets ranging from 200 to 2,500 kVA provided spare power for the Osmangazi suspension bridge, which allows people to drive across the İzmit Bay in just six minutes.

The Gebze-İzmir motorway was built in two phases and required over 8,600,000 tons of asphalt.
