Singapore - Caterpillar Global Petroleum is pleased to announce Cat® C280-16 generator sets with an increased power rating have been selected by Jurong Shipyard, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine, to power the Moss Maritime designed CS60 West Rigel. The West Rigel is a semisubmersible drilling rig newbuild under construction for North Atlantic Drilling Limited, a subsidiary of Seadrill Limited. Eight C280-16 generator sets, each with rated power of 5500 ekw (5730 bkw @ 900 rpm), will be used as the main power for the semisubmersible rig, with two of the generator sets serving as emergency power as well. The C280 has a stellar reputation in the oil and gas industry as a trusted provider of power for decades. The new uprate provides a 12% increase in overall power.
Key Cat product differentiating features such as a smaller footprint and higher power density in comparison to similar medium speed engines in the market, together with the legendary Cat product reputation of providing reliability, quality and durability, were key considerations in Jurong Shipyard’s decision to use the C280-16 generator set for its first Moss Maritime designed CS60 semisubmersible newbuild. Additionally stellar collaboration and strong support by Cat dealer Tractors Singapore Limited (TSL) cemented the selection of Cat power solutions for the project. “We are indeed honored that Jurong Shipyard and North Atlantic Drilling Limited has again selected Caterpillar to power their new generation semisubmersible rig. Caterpillar, together with TSL, will once again provide Jurong Shipyard with our utmost support.” Augustine Phey, Caterpillar Global Petroleum offshore business development manager noted
Scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2015, this new ultra-deepwater harsh-environment semisubmersible rig, will be built for a water depth rating of 10,000 feet and a maximum drilling depth of 40,000 feet. It will be an N-Class compliant 6th generation rig capable of dynamic positioning operations in deepwater and thruster-assisted mooring in shallow waters in the North Sea. The rig is also engineered and winterized to carry out year-round drilling operations in such areas. The C280-16 generator sets will be delivered in the third quarter of 2013.
For this specific project, Caterpillar developed customized power solutions from the factory to uniquely meet customer requirements on the project. In addition to the increased power rating, the generator set also meets the applicable Norwegian continental shelf state regulations as developed and enforced by the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSA). Cat dealer TSL led Caterpillar’s efforts on the sale. TSL, along with the global Cat dealer network, provides superior, around-the-clock service to customers around the globe delivering stellar product support upon the proven performance of Cat products.
