New Hydraulic Excavators—313D2 GC, 313D2 L, and 318D2 L—Feature Fuel-Efficient Engines, Powerful Hydraulics, and Durable Main Structures

For Release in South America: November 2016
Release Number: 426PR16

Three new models in the Caterpillar range of small hydraulic excavators—313D2 GC, 313D2 L, and 318D2 L—all use the fuel-efficient Cat® C4.4 ACERT diesel engine that meets China Nonroad Stage III,  U.S. EPA Tier 3/EU Stage IIIA equivalent emissions standards and will meet Brazil MAR-1 emissions standards.  Each new model features a powerful hydraulic system that delivers generous flows and pressures for aggressive digging and lifting, as well as for competently handling powered attachments. For long-term durability, the new models use a massive mainframe, complemented by a heavy-duty, grease-lubricated undercarriage and robotically welded, reinforced booms and sticks.

Engines used in the 313D2 GC and 313D2, both ISO 14396-rated at 100 gross horsepower (75 kW) and ISO 9294-rated at 91 net horsepower (68kw), are equipped with mechanically controlled, low-pressure fuel systems that are capable of operating efficiently with fuels of varying quality. Both machines also deliver significantly better fuel efficiency, compared with that of predecessor models. The new 318D2 L has an ISO-14396 rating of 125 horsepower (93kW) and features an electronically controlled fuel-injection system.

Powerful and versatile

Hydraulic power and efficiency are key design features for the new excavator models, with hydraulic flows of 61, 67, and 72 gpm (232, 254, and 272 L/min), respectively. Relief pressure (equipment) is 4,420 psi (30 500 kPa) for the two smaller units and 5,080 psi (35 000 kPa) for the 318D2 L. The power of the hydraulic systems allows the new excavators to take on demanding digging and lifting tasks, and the systems develop high hydraulic horsepower to efficiently handle the hydraulic demands of powered work tools.

The hydraulic system for all models features a new design with shorter lines that reduce friction and pressure drops, resulting in an overall more efficient use of power. The 313D2 L and 318D2 L also feature an “Economy” operating mode, as well as regeneration circuits that save energy during boom-down and stick-in operation.

Versatility is designed into the new models, with a complete range of buckets and work tools available, including grapples, thumbs, hydraulic hammers, and compactors. An available hydraulic coupler allows operators to change non-powered work tools without leaving the cab. Visit www.cat.com/attachments for a full list of appropriate available work tools.

Operating environment

The spacious cabs for the new models are ergonomically designed with easy-to-reach controls and use special viscous mounts to significantly reduce vibration and sound. Seats are comfortable and accommodating, joystick controllers are adjustable with a low-effort design, and an automatic climate-control system further contributes to operator comfort and convenience. In addition, large glass areas in the cab provide all-around visibility for added safety.

For operator and service technician safety, the hydraulic activation lever locks out all hydraulic functions when the operator exits the cab. A full-length fire wall separates the engine compartment from the hydraulic-pump compartment, and a ground-level engine-shut-off switch stops the engine in an emergency. Also, anti-skid plating with countersunk retainers helps the operator and technician move around the machine with added safety.

Serviceability and technology

Most routine service points for the new models can be reached from ground level, with the highly efficient water separator/fuel filters conveniently positioned in the radiator compartment. Taps for system pressures and S·O·SSM (Scheduled Oil Sampling) ports are easily accessible in order to monitor machine health. The new models are designed to keep owning and operating costs at a minimum.

The overall value of the new excavators is significantly enhanced with Cat Connect technology. For example, Link technologies, such as Product Link™, provide vital information (including machine location, fuel consumption, utilization, and diagnostic codes) via the VisionLink® web-based interface to assist in timely, efficient fleet management.
