Producing Constant, Adaptable Power for Minnesota Energy Station

As the main source of backup power, the Fairmont Energy Station needed a reliable, flexible solution for generating consistent energy to the region. When updating their systems, they opted for a solution that would decrease start-up lead times with faster response power.

With the help of Cat® dealer Ziegler Power Systems, four Cat G16CM34 generator sets were installed, producing 25 MW of new power in addition to the 12 MW of existing diesel generation. The gensets start up quickly, and power can be adjusted directly as needed. The system is also able to work in tandem with wind generation, a major consideration in the region.

“The new generator sets will ultimately run 1,000 to 2,000 hours per year,” says Peter Reinarts, manager of generation and operation. Reinarts has worked with Caterpillar and Ziegler on several projects. “The greatest testament to our satisfaction with Caterpillar is immediately selecting them as a partner on similar projects.”
