Legendary engine platform to resume production in late 2013
New Orleans, LA – Caterpillar Marine Power Systems is relaunching one of the most successful marine engine platforms in its history at the 2013 International Workboat Show. The Cat® 3406C marine propulsion engine will enter production in late 2013, providing customers in lesser regulated countries, including Latin America and Asia, with an economical, dependable solution for their commercial marine vessels. The mechanically governed 3406C propulsion engine will be available in ratings of 272 bkW @ 1800 rpm and 298 bkW @ 1800 rpm. The engine is ideal for small offshore, inland waterways and commercial fishing applications.
“Initially introduced in 1992, the Cat 3406C has developed an outstanding reputation in the commercial marine industry as a virtually indestructible piece of iron,” said Seth Charna, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems product definition engineer. “The 3406C is ideal for customers operating in lesser regulated countries who want a traditional, proven Cat platform that embodies our brand values of reliability and durability.”
The 3406C presents customers with numerous advantages as a propulsion solution for their vessels. The mechanical engine is easy to install, operate and maintain, featuring many shared components from the original engine design. The engine performs at optimal levels even in the harshest environments in the most rugged of engine rooms, backed by the Cat global dealer network in even the most remote locations. Additionally with the relaunch of the platform, the engine will be offered with either keel cooled or heat exchanger cooling systems. Charna noted, “Customers asked for this platform to return to our product portfolio – it is an economical, dependable power solution that they can have confidence in given the 3406C’s great track record in the industry.”
