Peoria, IL - Caterpillar is pleased to announce its sponsorship of the 2013 High Horsepower Summit (HHP) Summit, September 17-19 in Chicago, Illinois. This technology and end-user conference is North America's leading conference on the use of natural gas to fuel high horsepower operations. As an industry leader in the design and manufacture of dual-fuel and natural gas engines, Caterpillar will feature keynote speakers on the HHP agenda, share the company's natural gas strategy and focus on its commitment to continue to deliver the best customer value for energy and power systems operations, rail, marine and mining applications.

HHP attendees will receive a comprehensive overview of customer application stories and product plans for Caterpillar's latest Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) and High Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI) products. Attendees will also have the opportunity to take part in tours of our La Grange, Illinois, and Lafayette, Indiana, engine facilities.
Engine test cell evaluations show the HPDI technology being developed for Cat mining trucks is capable of providing greater than 90 percent diesel substitution, while operating at diesel-equivalent performance, as well as providing overall greenhouse gas reduction. Caterpillar anticipates that this will provide significant fuel savings based on the current price differential between natural gas and diesel and contribute to more sustainable mining operations.
Electro-Motive Diesel Inc. (EMD), part of Caterpillar's Rail Division, is developing DGB and HPDI natural gas solutions for its 710 Series engine for rail and marine applications. EMD has invested substantially in these technologies, which will allow customers to utilize natural gas, while maintaining leading performance and reliability.
"We are extremely pleased with the development of our natural gas locomotive, which will make another fuel option available to customers on a worldwide basis. We have collaborated closely with the Large Power Systems team at Caterpillar and are leveraging enterprise-wide technologies to develop these solutions," said Billy Ainsworth, EMD president and chief executive officer.
These advanced technologies will meet or exceed the Environmental Protection Agency's emission standards. The company anticipates having locomotive test units operating in North America this year.
