Finning Power Systems’ Engines Chosen by ClydeUnion Pumps

Finning UK, one of the world’s largest distributors of Caterpillar equipment and power systems, was selected by ClydeUnion Pumps, global specialists in the design and manufacture of pumps for onshore and offshore oil and gas applications, to provide a custom engineered package to provide emergency power for the firewater pumping equipment at a production facility located in Iraq’s Garraf oil field.

Finning has supplied two fire pump packages each comprising a Cat® 3412 direct-injection, turbocharged, after-cooled diesel engine rated in accordance with NFPA20, the National Fire Protection Association standard. Each engine is capable of providing 800bhp at 1750rpm.

The Cat engine is modified for operation in the desert with radiator cooling and is part of a complete package, which includes the supporting base, the weatherproof enclosure, the controls, cooling, exhaust, and fuel system. This has provided ClydeUnion Pumps with a single-source of supply that meets its precise requirements within the project schedule. Each Cat engine and ClydeUnion Pumps’ unit is installed by Finning in a purpose-designed, weatherproof enclosure fitted with sand traps to ensure high reliability in the desert atmosphere. A control panel was designed to comply with NFPA20, which is the standard for the installation of stationary pumps for fire protection. Additionally, each engine and pump package is fitted with a 12-hour fuel tank.

Commenting on the reasons for selecting Finning as its single-source engine provider, Geoff Keen, Regional Sales Director from ClydeUnion Pumps said, “The firewater pumping system is a critical component in the safe operation of the production facility. Although the units will only operate in test mode for one hour a week, we need to have complete confidence that the engines selected will always be available to deliver reliable, uninterruptible power in the event of a fire.”

The engine package is currently being tested by ClydeUnion Pumps before installation and commissioning on site, due to take place early 2013.
