As the global climate changes, more companies are turning to sustainable solutions to help lower their carbon footprint. Renewable hydrogen and hydrogen blends are among several alternative fuels companies are considering as they work toward their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. To meet the growing demand for renewable power sources, Caterpillar has added three new generator sets capable of running on hydrogen fuel.
Cat® generator sets across the entire G3500 engine platform may now be configured to enable operation on natural gas blended with up to 25% hydrogen for 50 or 60 Hz continuous, prime, and load management applications.
From natural gas to biogas, coal mine gases, or hydrogen fuel blends to support combined heat and power (CHP), emergency power, and local grid support applications, Caterpillar has a wide range of reliable gas power solutions.

Caterpillar has years of experience conducting research on alternative fuels like hydrogen blends and 100% hydrogen in reciprocating engines and developing hydrogen technologies. Generator sets across the G3500 platform may now be configured to operate on natural gas blended with up to 25% hydrogen for 50- or 60-Hz continuous, prime, and load management applications. Three new hydrogen-capable models include the G3512H rated at 1515 kW, the G3516H offering 2027 kW, and the G3520H listed at 2519 kW.
The expanded portfolio of hydrogen-fueled generator sets is safe to operate and has the same long maintenance interval as natural gas powered assets. Because hydrogen is a clean-burning fuel, highly efficient hydrogen-fueled generator sets have lower emissions and help achieve decarbonization goals. With options to configure existing assets for natural-gas pipeline blending today, users can prepare to meet the changing fuel requirements of the future.
Cutting-Edge Development of Hydrogen-Fueled Power Solutions
Caterpillar continues to improve the performance of hydrogen-fueled power technologies with minimal impacts on maintenance costs and schedules, availability, and operations.
