Caterpillar Adds 1.5 MW Standby Power Node to Growing Portfolio of EPA-Certified, Fast Response Natural-Gas Generator Sets for Mission-Critical Applications

For Worldwide Release: January 5, 2022

DEERFIELD, IL – Caterpillar Inc. today introduced the Cat® G3516 Fast Response generator set, adding a 1.5 MW power node to its growing lineup of natural-gas power solutions offering market-leading load acceptance, transient response and EPA certification for mission-critical applications.

Available now in North America for 60 Hz applications, the Cat G3516 generator set adds to Caterpillar’s industry-leading lineup of fast response natural-gas power solutions, which now includes standby power nodes from 175 kW to 2.5 MW.  The G3516 is compatible with NFPA 110 Level 1 Type 10, and is UL 2200 listed. It is engineered to start and accept load from a cold start as quickly as 6.5 to 7.5 seconds, and it is capable of accepting and recovering from a 100% block load.

Caterpillar’s fast response natural-gas generator sets are the first certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in emergency and non-emergency applications. They are also available with additional emissions reduction technologies that can lower NOx levels to as low as 0.5 g/bhp-hr without aftertreatment.

“Natural-gas generator sets are becoming increasingly attractive standby power options as customers focus on their environmental, social and governance objectives,” said Brian George, product manager in Caterpillar’s Electric Power Division.  “By adding the G3516 to our portfolio of fast response natural-gas generator sets, we are making it easier for customers to configure a power solution that delivers the superior performance required for mission-critical applications while reducing their carbon footprints.”

The Cat G3516 features Caterpillar’s EMCP 4 control system, providing engine and generator set control, protection, and monitoring. The optional EMCP 4.4 provides the ability to parallel multiple generator sets in a wide range of gas and diesel applications. The Cat G3516 easily integrates into building management systems, with ethernet communication capabilities inherent to the control system. The expanded features of this package include gas train, package-mounted radiators, and simplified wiring for ease of installation.

Engineered for emergency, legally required or optional standby systems, the Cat G3516 Fast Response generator set is ideal for a wide range of applications, including hospitals, data centers, retail complexes, schools, government buildings and universities, as well as research and industrial facilities. It is well-suited for peak shaving or load management applications as well.

Caterpillar delivers innovative power systems engineered for durability, reliability and value. The company offers worldwide product support, with parts and services packaged in customer value agreements available through the Cat authorized service and dealer network. In addition, dealer technicians are trained to provide a comprehensive range of maintenance and services that help customers optimize the total cost of ownership of Cat equipment.
