Eggersmann Universal FORUS pre-shredders
Germany
Cat C3.4B, C3.6, C7.1 and C9.3B U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final/EU stage V Industrial Engines
The power and reliability of Cat® engines helps to uphold it.
We’ve all become aware of the downside of living in a throwaway society. That’s especially true of plastics; they’re based on fossil fuels and have a life that extends for thousands of years, so it makes little sense to simply bury them in landfill. The same thinking can be applied to the metals and rare elements used in electronics. Some waste products can be directly reused, but if not, the next best option is to separate and recycle.
That’s where Eggersmann’s shredding technology can play a vital role. From discarded mattresses to tyres, solar panels to biomass, the company’s universal shredders can crush their way through up to 50 tonnes of material per hour, rendering it into evenly sized piles that can be efficiently processed and put to good use.
Based in Waren, Germany, the company’s pre-shredder division began life in 1976 as a forest technology business in the former German Democratic Republic. Today, the FORUS range of pre-shredders is exported throughout the world, with export markets as far afield as Japan, Australia and Greenland as well as closer to home within the EU.
“We’re part of the Eggersmann Group, which has around 1,000 employees in total,” explains Clemens Gierz, technical manager. “But our division is relatively small, with 49 employees and annual production of around 40 machines. It’s a competitive world so we’re always looking to innovate — and reliability is essential to maintain our reputation. After years of experience with various engine manufacturers, Caterpillar emerged as our preferred engine supplier.”
His colleague, service manager Robert Skalei, agrees. “Our customers demand a minimum of downtime, so the Cat® worldwide service network is a major advantage. We’ve found Cat engines to be very reliable. All connections and filters are easy to reach, so our clients are very satisfied with the minimal effort to install and maintain the machine.”
The FORUS series includes twin-shaft pre-shredders, which offer a range of programmable setups according to the material that’s being processed. As a result, they can effortlessly shred everything from domestic, commercial and industrial waste to wood, green waste and rootstocks. Design features such as the hydraulic breaker bar quick change system, combined with ample space below the crushing unit, mean that operators can swap breaker bars in just fifteen minutes to achieve the ideal output size for a specific material. For instance, the company recently developed a unique configuration for recycling solar panels, with a special breaker bar to reduce shredded components to the correct final particle size. In combination with the hydraulically liftable magnetic separator, adjustable to the material flow, the team are confident they can offer the right solution for each application.
“We offer a range of machines powered by Cat engines,” explains Gierz. “Our smallest model is the HB 70, which is popular in Japan. That’s powered either by a Cat C3.4B or C3.6. The mainstay of the range is the SE 25 powered by a Cat C7.1, while our largest model is the SE 38 powered by a Cat C9.3B. In each case one of the main advantages is the transient response of the engines — the ability to go from idling to full power in seconds. Even with Stage V exhaust emission reduction, we’ve found there’s no loss of power.”
As a relatively small, agile team Eggersmann’s FORUS division depends on a close working relationship with Zeppelin, its Cat dealer. “They’re always willing to provide documents, solve problems or answer our questions,” says Skalei. “It’s an uncomplicated, solution-oriented relationship and they’ve been providing support since the mid-1990s. We’re very happy with the collaboration.”
For 2022, the company plans the launch of a new model line, the SE 38, which will be powered by the Cat C9.3B. In addition to the FORUS line of two shaft pre-shredders, Eggersmann GmbH also supplies the TEUTON line of one shaft pre-shredders, the BACKHUS range of windrow turners, TERRA SELECT trommel screening machines, stationary technology such as ballistic separators from BRT HARTNER and a complete plant construction service. With a growing base of contented users around the world and increasing social pressures to dispose of waste responsibly, the team at Eggersmann is optimistic about the future — backed by the power of Cat diesel engines and their dealer, Zeppelin.
