SHIFTING THE FOCUS TO SMALLER, LIGHTER, MORE EFFICIENT ENGINE PACKAGES

Forged with more than 40 years of experience in liquid-transfer technology, Puck Enterprises produces industry-leading equipment for myriad customers. “My father, Ben Puck, started the company in 1979 by applying manure and commercial waste for local customers,” says Jeremy Puck, General Manager at Puck Enterprises. “What started as a local manure application business has grown to become a global force in liquid-transport equipment.”

Puck products are used across multiple industries, including agriculture, oil and gas, forestry, mining and municipalities. The company has always focused on helping customers achieve higher flow rates, gain greater precision and control, and minimize equipment downtime. However, cleaner emissions became a major focus as well when U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emissions standards were being phased in for off-highway diesel engines. Therefore, Puck began searching for advanced power solutions.
Puck ultimately chose the C9.3B, C13B and other Cat® industrial engines. The C9.3B and the C13B each leverage a proven, reliable core engine, with added improvements that enhance overall value. Both engines feature high power density in a compact, lightweight design, allowing OEMs to downsize their engine platforms and lower installation costs. The C9.3B and C13B also meet EU Stage V/U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emissions standards.

COLLABORATION MADE THE CONVERSION TO CAT ENGINES POSSIBLE

“We chose to go with the Cat brand for four main reasons: power density resulting in a smaller engine package, compact aftertreatments, the ease of plug-and-play integration, and enhanced emissions control,” Jeremy states. “We had one other reason as well: Cat industrial engines are backed by a dealer network recognized as the world’s best in the industry.”

Once the decision was made to use Cat engines, Puck began working closely with Cat dealer Ziegler Power Systems in Altoona, Iowa. With extensive experience in providing industrial power solutions, Ziegler was the right source for the expertise, advice and implementation capabilities that Puck required.

“Both Caterpillar and Ziegler made this move very easy, and the results have been outstanding for our company,” Jeremy says. “Knowing that our equipment meets current emissions standards is a big selling point to our customers. They know there is another advantage, too: Cat Tier 4 engines lower end users’ operating costs by improving fuel efficiency.”

He says customers also appreciate Caterpillar’s global presence and support, which serve to enhance the performance and reliability of Puck liquid-transfer equipment.

The company’s pump trailers and floating agitation boats are now powered by four engine models from Caterpillar: the C7.1 (302 hp), the C9.3B (456 hp), the C13B (577 hp), and the C18 (755 hp) industrial diesel engines. Furthermore, Puck continues to rely on Ziegler for assistance on a regular basis.

“Ziegler is a solid partner that offers good support, testing and response time to any of our needs,” says Jeremy. “We have a very positive working relationship.”

“CAT INDUSTRIAL ENGINES ARE BACKED BY A DEALER NETWORK RECOGNIZED AS THE WORLD’S BEST IN THE INDUSTRY.”
