CONCRETE FINISHING
APPLICATIONS
AJAX is a world-class equipment manufacturer that provides concrete solutions to the construction industry. The company was established in 1992 and started out manufacturing self-loading concrete mixers. Today, AJAX is the global leader in the self-loading concrete mixer equipment category.
Over the years, AJAX expanded its product range substantially to also include concrete batching plants, transit mixers, stationary pumps and boom pumps. The company is renowned for its in-house engineering expertise, and operates state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities at Doddaballapur and Gowribidanur on the outskirts of Bangalore.
AJAX is committed to embracing a digital transformation and evolving to meet the changing needs of the concreting industry. This involves evaluating market opportunities, improving core capabilities and strengths, updating benchmarking processes, meeting international standards and aligning with key global scenarios to sustain progress. These efforts are especially important in India and many of the emerging markets, as they seek to build and expand important infrastructures.
The company also stays up to date in terms of technological advancements industrial engine innovations. For example, when AJAX engineers needed to specify an engine for a new product – the high-performance SPX 1204 Slipform Paver – they turned to Caterpillar to find a leading-edge solution.
The SPX 1204 Slipform Paver is a massive machine that spreads out, forms and applies an initial finish to the surface of low-slump Portland cement concrete. Contractors use it to create a continuous and seamless pavement surface for road construction projects.
“Slipform pavers are huge machines that weigh up to 80 tons,” says Mr. S M Riaz Nawaz, Head of Product Engineering at AJAX. “So, when we started working on development of this particular product, we felt the need to use a reliable engine. Of course, the ultimate choice was a Cat® engine.” With assistance from Cat dealer Gmmco, AJAX engineers selected and integrated the Cat C9, a severe-duty engine that is designed and built to perform in demanding conditions, applications and environments.
“When we began working on the 1204 Slipform Paver, we approached Gmmco with our requirements,” he explains. “They recommended the C9 and then we finalized the scope of supply and started working on the layouts. Later, during the integration of the engine with our control system, the Caterpillar team provided very good technical support to help us resolve some issues quickly and meet our objectives. Thanks to their support, we were able to complete the project.”
“In fact, we were well supported through the entire process, from the start of the project to final testing,” Nawaz states. “The Gmmco sales and service teams are easily approachable and skilled at providing helpful solutions quickly. The whole experience was positive and tension free.”
The final result is a new, specialized paving machine that outperforms others in its class. Nawaz says AJAX engineers are especially impressed with the C9 engine’s low noise, excellent fuel efficiency, and legendary Cat reliability and durability – advantages that add significant value and appeal to end users. “Customers get the benefits of reduced operating costs and maximum uptime, as well as solid support from the Cat dealer network,” says Mr. Debasish Bhattacharya, Head of Sales and Marketing. “Those are competitive selling points that help set us apart.”
