Puratos is an international group that offers a full range of innovative products and application expertise for artisans, industry, retailers, and food service customers in the bakery, patisserie, and chocolate sectors. Founded in 1919, the company has more than 9,400 employees, and its products and services are available in over 100 countries around the world.
Puratos is committed to minimizing the impact of its activities on the environment. The company’s primary focus is on carbon emissions and water balance, with goals to be carbon neutral in 2025 and reduce water usage by 25% in 2030.
“Our shareholders, management team, and employees share the vision that Puratos only has a future if the company can make strong social and environmental contributions. Operating in a sustainable way is a necessity,” said Franck Cassé, environmental sustainability program manager at Puratos.
To help meet the company’s sustainability goals, Puratos selected Eneria Belgium, the local Cat® dealer, to design and install a combined heat and power (CHP) system that supplies electrical power and heat for operations at its headquarters and manufacturing operations in Groot-Bijgaarden, Belgium, located on the outskirts of Brussels.
Facilities can reduce operating costs by implementing a Cat cogeneration CHP system or a trigeneration system incorporating cooling. This enables the units to simultaneously provide power for electrical loads as well as thermal energy for a facility’s heat and cooling requirements.
The system used by Puratos features the high-efficiency Cat G3512H gas generator set, which operates about 7,500 hours per year to deliver 1.5 MW of power as well as 1.5 MW of heat. When power is not required for facility operations, the system can be used to provide stability and availability for the local grid.
The CHP application also includes a customized enclosure to reduce noise, as well as switchgear to integrate with the facility’s electrical system.
“The CHP system perfectly illustrates how investments in sustainability can also be financially attractive,” said Gianni Vanneste, utility and energy manager for Puratos’ operations in Belgium.
Eneria will support the long-term performance of the system through a 10-year Customer Value Agreement for total maintenance and repair that includes technical services as well as spare parts. Eneria is also supplying remote services to help manage operations and monitor performance from off-site.
