Choosing the right tool is essential in any craft. You don’t whittle with a sword, and you don’t cut lumber with a butter knife. When it comes to hydraulic mining shovels, finding the right ground engaging tools (GET) is important for an efficient and skillful operation. Keep reading to learn more about your options.

Cat® GET tips, adapters and shrouds are designed for optimal penetration, abrasion resistance and easy replacement. Choosing the right product from Caterpillar’s wide range of tips and adapters will help you move more material per cycle. Plus, you’ll benefit from lower costs per ton and less maintenance downtime. The right GET will protect your investment in the bucket.
Most of these components attach to the bucket using the Cat CapSure retention system. This eliminates the dangerous and time-consuming chore of hammering out connecting pins. Instead, the pins are built with a square drive recess in one end. All you have to do is slide the pin into its recess, turn the square drive 180 degrees with a square drive tool and then lock the pieces together.
There are three different systems for mining shovels: CL-1, X-3 and X-2. Watch this video and keep reading this article to learn about these ground engaging tool systems.

The CL-1 system starts with lightweight, cast-iron lips that maximize production and cycle times for higher capacity buckets. They require less energy to fill the bucket, and the strength of cast iron results in less lip flex. Optimized Spade Angle Shrouds reduce material forces across the shroud.
The CL-1 tips are engineered for performance and ease of replacement. This means CL-1 tips deliver better penetration and increased bucket fill in hard rock and abrasive conditions. And quick CapSure changeout times and maximum lip protection result in less downtime and lowered maintenance costs. Couplers are available in performance styles for productivity and extended wear versions for use in hard rock and high-abrasion applications.
CL-1 tips include designs for:
Penetration: moderate impact and abrasion
Abrasion: 8% more wear material than the CL-P tip
Panel: wide, flat edges for all-around penetration
Performance: moderate impact and abrasion
Heavy Duty Penetration: maximum productivity
Extended Wear Life: for use in hard rock and extreme abrasion
CL-1 couplers attach to the nose base with a hammerless retainer. Dual load-bearing surfaces on the coupler pocket reduce nose stress and wear. Large system components absorb the impact force, thanks to the concave-fit tooth on performance couplers. And for prolonged life, the extended wear life coupler includes extra wear material as well.
Additionally, long-wearing CL-1 box point tips act as both a tip and coupler for the CL-1 lip. These are available in panel box and penetration box designs. And CL-1 wing shrouds protect the side wings and feature a hammerless retention system so that the vertical edges of the bucket are not neglected.
The X-3 system GET system fits onto existing systems and works with a full selection of tip styles and lip protection. If you need it, Cat Laminated Wear Products extend the X-3 component life in harsh applications.
For aftermarket applications, Caterpillar’s reload cast lips with a Cat C130 nose base provide reliability and the lowest cost per hour. It uses the CapSure retention system to make tip changes fast, safe and simple. Machined surfaces ensure a tight fit between GET and new lips.
X-3 couplers pin onto the existing nose base with either a side pin with CapSure retention or a vertical wedge and spool coupler and pin. For lip and wing protection, the X-3 system uses shrouds with a retention boss and the CapSure pins.
Caterpillar includes a variety of tip designs in the X-3 system to make sure you have optimum digging and loading capacity with each bucket in any conditions or applications. CapSure retention is built into all of them. The X-3 tips include:
Centerline: a general-purpose tip for excellent penetration and impact resistance
Centerline Abrasion: 12% longer than the centerline tip and ideal for moderate impact and high-abrasion applications
Twin Spike: delivers easy penetration in moderate impact, high-abrasion conditions
Below Centerline: a self-sharpening tip angled down 15 degrees to optimize penetration
Heavy Duty Below Centerline: for extreme top abrasion and high-impact applications common in dragline operations
Heavy Duty: combines a Split and Long Below Centerline design for low impact, extreme abrasion and aggressive penetration
Engineered to Order: customized tips for unique and specific applications
Caterpillar’s three-piece side pin and vertical pin couplers can be paired with Laminated Wear Products, which extend life in high-abrasion applications. The retainer is built into the tip to speed up changeout. You can lock these on or take them off with just one turn.
The X-2 class of adapters feature hammerless shrouds to protect the bucket’s base edge, while conventional pins secure the wing shrouds. If you have a mixed fleet, your Cat dealer can inspect your non-Cat buckets and provide a customized Cat GET for them.
Options include:
General Purpose: an all-around performer and the baseline for other tip styles
Abrasion: 62% more wear material than the X2-P tip
Penetration: for densely compacted material, 52% sharper than the General Purpose style
Impact: 25% stronger than X-2 General Purpose style
Heavy Duty Penetration: best penetration in high impact and abrasive materials
Sharp: high-level penetration in low to moderate impact and abrasion environments
Engineered to Order: custom designs for unique applications and materials
