Selecting GET for Your Hydraulic Mining Shovel

Ground engaging tools (GET) are key components on your Cat® hydraulic mining shovel. Not only can they improve your machine’s performance, but they can prolong its working life and increase uptime. In fact, the right GET can improve machine performance by up to 20%.

When choosing the right ground engaging tools (GET) for your hydraulic mining shovel, there’s no comparison to Cat® products. They are designed specifically to improve operations for your existing Cat equipment.

Let’s look at two key areas of focus: bucket tips and GET systems.

BUCKET TIP SELECTION

Cat bucket tips are designed in a variety of shapes and sizes to meet the needs of specific applications and environments. Each tip is designed with three factors in mind:

  • Strength: The resistance to breakage from impacts.

  • Penetration: The ability to cut through a material.

  • Wear life: The weight of wear material available and material properties.

When picking a bucket tip for your hydraulic mining shovel, you can choose from four styles:

  • Abrasion tips: Longer and with more wear material to prioritize wear life.

  • Penetration tips: Featuring a small contact surface and tapered body to prioritize penetration.

  • General purpose tips: Balancing strength, penetration and wear life.

  • Impact tips: Shorter overall length and stronger tip pocket to prioritize strength.

As you compare these tip styles, think through the specific application and environment in which your hydraulic mining shovel will be used. Your Cat dealer can then guide you toward which ones are best for your needs.

SELECTING THE RIGHT GET SYSTEM

Along with tip selection, it’s important to decide which GET system best fits the needs of your hydraulic mining shovel.

  • CL-1  Systems (400-1,000 tons): There are two styles of GET CL-1 systems. Choose a performance system focused on increasing productivity, rates of penetration and bucket fill. Or pick the extended wear life system which maintains the benefits of the performance system but was designed for use in hard rock applications and high abrasion areas.

  • X-3 System (400-1,000 tons): The X-3 class of GET fits readily onto existing nose base systems for 500-ton hydraulic mining shovels. The robust design can be enhanced with Cat laminated wear products to extend life in high-abrasion mining applications.

  • X-2 System (100-400 tons): The X-2 class adapters are welded to our fabricated base edges to provide industry-leading durability. Hammerless shrouds protect the base edge, while conventional pins secure the wing shrouds.

HOW CAT GET SYSTEMS HELP

When you go with Cat GET, you can expect:

  • Durability: Cat GET systems feature innovative solutions with long-lasting materials.

  • Reliability: Components are designed to match the operation of Cat machinery.

  • Performance: Cat tools are designed specifically for the rigors of mining applications.
