The people behind Cat^® rebuilds know mining is a demanding industrial enterprise. Mining requires world-class engineering, technology and fleet operations that run with militant precision. When it comes to rebuilding something as large, valuable and powerful as your mining heavy equipment, the mine’s production schedule and your company’s revenue is on the line.

Repair and maintenance are necessary for all heavy equipment. However, Cat components are built for multiple lives. The substantial residual value of used mining machines makes them excellent rebuild candidates.

COMPREHENSIVE PROCESS

The Cat Certified Rebuilds program follows standards established by Caterpillar that are implemented worldwide. The entire machine or component is inspected for any hidden problems that haven’t yet affected performance. Certain engineering updates may be required, but all the parts will be thoroughly cleaned, inspected, tested and reused or replaced. That can amount to up to 7,000 parts for a mining machine. The reconditioning work goes above and beyond returning your machine to like-new condition. Examples include reconditioning the frame, replacing electronic control modules, wiring harness and updating software.

Before your Cat Certified Rebuilt machine or component leaves the shop, it undergoes performance tests – a complete machine rebuild includes more than 350. These tests make sure you can run your rebuilt machine as long and hard as you did when it was new. And your certified, rebuilt machine gets a Rebuild Identification Number (RIN) that gives it a new identity.

Timelines

Caterpillar understands that time is money. Depending on the extent of the work needed, they offer rough timelines for rebuilds. Component rebuilds can take two to three weeks, and powertrain rebuilds take between four and eight weeks. For a full machine Cat Certified Rebuild, you’re looking at more like eight to 12 weeks. Caterpillar offers solutions like Customer Value Agreements to help you plan and manage this machine downtime. This means you can keep your mine site moving while extending machine life.

ON-SITE REBUILDS

Since some mining machines present transport challenges, Caterpillar makes on-site rebuilds possible for certain operations. You can coordinate on-site rebuild plans with your dealer. Ask your dealer about rental options to eliminate downtime while your equipment is being rebuilt.

WARRANTIES, SERVICE AND SUPPORT

As with any new piece of equipment, the long-term success of your rebuild depends on the quality of the service. But success is also dependent on service and warranty agreements. Caterpillar’s programs include the following:

Cat Certified Rebuilds can be covered by a 12-month warranty on components. The full machine will also be covered if certain rebuild criteria are met. You can also add an Extended Protection Plan (EPP) to your certified rebuild, depending on your country and region.

But EPPs are not limited to certified rebuilds. If you opt for a dealer rebuild, you’ll be able to choose an EPP or other coverage options.
