Cat Trial 6: Driving Range

Hit a Hole in One With Cat

When you’re running Cat® machines on a golf course, you probably going with mini excavators and skid steers. The versatility of those machines is a perfect fit for the greens and the fairways. But Cat Trial 6: Driving Range will make you look at golf and our equipment in a whole new light.

We brought in two professional golfers - twin sisters Erimo and Marimo Ikeuchi - members of the Ladies Professional Golfers’ Association of Japan to take their best shots at this one-of-a-kind course, built at the Caterpillar Tinaja Hills Demonstration & Learning Center near Tucson, Arizona. For more than 20 years, Caterpillar has been a proud sponsor of the Japan LPGA’s Cat Ladies Golf Tournament—an event where Cat customers have the opportunity to play and interact with professional golfers.

Talk about going to extremes to build a golf course - Cat Trial 6: Driving Range demonstrates that a 793F Off-Highway Truck can have a full capacity load of 250 tons and still maneuver safely and quickly around other pieces of equipment. The video also features the 772G, 775G, 982M Wheel Loader, and an On-Highway Truck. These machines make up the fairway, the hazards and the green – and the moving golf course they combine to create is unlike any that pro golfers have ever attempted.

The course took three days to build, using just about every piece of machinery on site. It also showcases the skill of the operators, like yours, who not only created the course out of dirt and equipment—but who also safely and nimbly maneuvered the machines around one another while the Ikeuchi sisters showed great skill striking those balls off the tee.

One of the greatest golfers ever, Arnold Palmer, once said, “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.” Cat Trial 6: Driving Range drives that home in a way only Caterpillar can!

Go Behind the Scenes of “Driving Range,” the Latest in the Cat Trials

Building a golf course generally takes a couple of years. Building a desert golf course made entirely of moving Cat® machines? That took just three days. Watch it come together—and hear from the professionals who created and played the course—in this behind-the-scenes look at “Driving Range.”

The latest in the Cat Trials, a series of Caterpillar short films, “Driving Range” follows twin sisters Erimo and Marimo Ikeuchi—members of the Ladies Professional Golfers’ Association of Japan (LPGA). The sisters take their best shots at a golf course made up of a 772G, 775G and 793F Off-Highway Truck, 982M Wheel Loader, and CT660 On-Highway Truck.

This behind-the-scenes video highlights the construction of the course at the Caterpillar Tinaja Hills Demonstration & Learning Center near Tucson, Arizona.

“It took us three days to build the course,” says Bill Olson, Senior Demonstrator Instructor at Tinaja Hills. “I would say we probably used every piece of machinery at Tinaja to build this course.”

It also showcases the skill of the operators, who not only created the course out of dirt and equipment—but who also safely and nimbly maneuvered the machines around one another while the Ikeuchi sisters took their shots.

“While the equipment you see in the video is from our large mining equipment line, it really shows and demonstrates that while that 793F can have a full capacity load of 250 tons, it can still maneuver safely and quickly around all the other pieces of equipment,” says Archie Lyons, Creative Director at Caterpillar.

In addition, the video reveals Erimo and Marimo’s reactions to playing this one-of-a-kind course and highlights Caterpillar’s connection to golf in Japan. The company annually sponsors the Japan LPGA’s Cat Ladies Golf Tournament—an event where Cat customers have the opportunity to play and interact with professional golfers.
