Cat® Truck Engines: Near & Dear To Billy Frank's Heart

He may be a Caterpillar vice president today, but Billy Frank looks back with pride on the job where he spent his first years with the company. “I cut my teeth in on-highway trucking,” he says. “It’s always maintained a close place in my heart.” Find out why — and see how he and his team keep delivering mile after mile of support for truckers.

Earning Trust, Mile After Mile

Billy’s early days as a Cat on-highway truck engine service rep taught him the critical role the trucking industry plays in the nation’s economy.

“When I go into the grocery store and buy all the things I want, it’s not lost on me that each and every one of those items spent some time in a truck,” he says. “But the unique aspect of it is the people who are behind the wheels of those trucks moving those products.”

That’s why Billy has always made building and maintaining relationships with truckers a top priority.

“Customers want to know that they can depend on you,” he says. “They’re saying, ‘I'm going to choose this engine because I trust that it will perform. But if and when it doesn’t, I trust that I have a person who’s going to care about getting me back on the road as much as I do.’"

Cat Truck Engine Solutions For The Road Ahead

As he heads up the sales and marketing side of Caterpillar’s remanufacturing business, Billy remains closely connected to the on-highway trucking community. That’s because Cat Reman products play a big role in keeping Cat truck engines rolling.

Ranging from individual components like injectors and turbochargers all the way to long blocks and complete remanufactured engines, Cat Reman products deliver like new quality at a fraction-of-new price when you return your end-of-life core.1

Even though Caterpillar stopped selling new truck engines more than a decade ago, Billy sees the growth of Cat Reman repair options as a clear sign that the company never left the industry.

“We take great pride in supporting the population of engines that are out there today helping our customers,” he says. “And one of the things we’ve been very conscious of trying to do is bring out solutions that help increase their longevity.”

That includes the most recent Cat Reman offering: a heavy-duty remanufactured engine with new content that features 100% new cylinder blocks, crankshafts and cylinder heads.

A Community Of Support

For Billy, support for truckers extends far beyond products, though. It’s about having the right team in place to provide the parts, repairs, rebuilds and other services Cat truck engine owners need to keep the wheels turning.

“We want to meet our customers where they are,” he says. “And so we’ve challenged ourselves to build relationships with service outlets that are beyond our traditional Cat dealers and TEPS dealers.”

Over the past few years, Caterpillar has been working to establish a broader community of Cat truck engine repair pros — offering resources and support to independent repair facilities across the continent. The company continues to welcome new shops into the fold.

“At the end of the day, if there are outfits out there supporting Caterpillar products, we want to have a relationship with you,” Billy says. “We want to understand how we can help you support our customers better. Because if they have a Cat engine, we want to help you give them the very best support they can get.”

There's no question there are plenty of truckers relying on that support. More than a million Cat truck engines are still on the road today, as are dozens of members of the Million Miler Club — those who’ve exceeded a million miles on their Cat engines.

“I’m pretty proud the product we make continues to provide great efficiency, great longevity,” Billy says. “Our customers are eclipsing multiple millions of miles on their diesel engines. They’re still quite profitable with engines that have two decades plus of life.”
