Harry Stansberry was born to haul coal. His dad worked in coal mining, running a fleet of trucks, and Harry was raised in the business. He built street rods as a kid, started driving trucks at age 19 and bought his first Cat truck engine, a 3408, three years later in 1978. Harry says he feels his best when he’s behind the wheel of his truck.
Harry’s current truck is a Peterbilt, custom built by The Pete Store in 1985. It’s also powered by a Cat 3408 truck engine — which has been rebuilt twice and logged more than two million miles in total. Why is Harry such a fan of that engine? In his words: “I needed something that had power.”
Fun fact: Harry’s custom truck has four horns with a pull on either side of the cab. When the weather was bad or there was an accident on the road, Harry’s wife would pull the horn from the passenger side so he could focus on driving.
Coal was Harry’s primary cargo over the years. He typically ran out of Kentucky to Alabama, Florida, Georgia and other destinations across the south. Occasionally, he hauled coal to Florida and returned with sand. His favorite trips? Hauling coal four days a week (sometimes five) on an 800-mile journey to Georgia and back.
According to Harry, there are two keys to running a Cat truck engine two million miles plus: Change the oil monthly (for him that’s every 12,000 miles) and always use genuine Cat parts and filters. “Don’t use anything else,” he says. Great support helps, too, which Harry gets from The Pete Store in Knoxville.
