Truckers See Real Results with Cat® Reman Engines

Is it time to replace your Cat® on-highway truck engine? Are you looking for an alternative to a rebuild? Truck owners and repair shops alike are discovering the value of Cat Reman complete engines as a time- and money-saving option.

Cat Reman engines (medium- and heavy-duty) and Cat Reman engines with new content (heavy-duty only) are two drop-in truck repair options with the potential to get your truck back on the road at a price you can afford.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

Let's start with what's the same: Both options deliver like new performance. Both come fully assembled for a quick repair, which can help you save thousands in labor costs. And both come with warranty coverage.

Cat Reman heavy-duty engines are covered by a 24-month Caterpillar Limited Warranty.1 Cat Reman medium-duty engines are covered by a 36-month, 150,000-mile or 3,600-hour Caterpillar Limited Warranty,1 plus towing coverage for the first 12 months.

The key difference is that Cat Reman heavy-duty engines with new content feature 100% new cylinder blocks, cylinder heads and crankshafts. That helps reduce the risk of a critical failure in components inspected during an overhaul. It also makes future overhauls possible.

Which truck engine repair option is right for you? It largely depends on the condition of your core. Let’s take a look at a couple of real-world examples.

1Warranty can vary by model and application; limitations apply. For complete details about the applicable Caterpillar Limited Warranty, contact an authorized Cat dealer.

ALMA TRUCK SERVICE CUSTOMERS CAN GET A COMPLETE ENGINE FOR THE PRICE OF A REBUILD

Alma Truck Service, located in Alma, Arkansas, specializes in rebuilding, installing and sourcing cores for Cat 15-liter truck engines, primarily 3406E and C-15 models.

This independent repair shop, which works closely with TLG Peterbilt and Riggs Cat, often recommends Cat Reman engines to customers who need a pre-assembled solution and whose existing cores are in good condition — meaning no cracks, no fire damage and minimal rust.

Why? Because those customers typically pay a fraction-of-new price with core return.2 Danny Long, who owns Alma Truck Service, says that makes the total cost of a Cat Reman engine comparable with the cost of a rebuild performed in the shop. And he says customers appreciate the peace of mind offered by the Caterpillar Limited Warranty.

"Most people spend more time and money going around problems than trying to solve them," Long says. "That's why I go with genuine Cat products and repair options. Cat Reman engine options are a great quality build that gives the customer assurance for the next one to two million miles or more."

TRUCKER KEITH MACK UPGRADES TO HIGH-HORSEPOWER, LOWER-EMITTING MODEL

But what if your core is damaged due to failure or has no value due to excessive rust or corrosion? Or what if you want to upgrade to a newer engine model or replace another engine brand?3

That was the case for trucker Keith Mack, who’s based out of Stuttgart, Arkansas. He started hearing an unusual noise from his 2006 Peterbilt 379X and took the truck into the Dobbs Peterbilt shop in Little Rock. The diagnosis was a broken crankshaft.

The Dobbs team performed a cost analysis and determined that a Cat Reman heavy-duty engine with new content was the most affordable repair option for Mack. They were able to accept his core, even though the block was in poor condition.

Choosing a Cat Reman engine with new content also allowed Mack to move from an older, higher-emitting model to a newer, lower-emitting one — in his case, a high-horsepower C15 ACERT™ engine. And because he plans to keep running his truck for the long haul, Mack added Extended Service Coverage (ESC) for 60 months/500,000 miles.4

3Some exclusions apply.
460-month coverage is available on heavy-duty Cat Reman engines with a 500,000-mile limit. Contact an authorized Cat dealer for details.
