From the growing housing market to outdoor living spaces, check out these 2022 landscaping industry trends and learn how they might impact your business.
John Janes | Landscaping Marketing Manager
The past two years have been full of big changes for many industries, including landscaping. We’ve changed how we work, live and play, and those changes are reflected in some of the 2022 landscaping industry trends that are starting to appear.
Something that will have a big impact on 2022 landscaping industry trends is the growth of the housing market in North America. The past several years have seen a boom in the housing market in the U.S., with 16-year highs for home sales across the country. Younger home buyers place more importance on landscaping and yard maintenance for their homes. With 45 million Millennials in the prime demographic for buying their first home, that presents a lot of opportunity for landscapers to offer up their services and form lasting relationships with new home buyers.
A 2022 landscaping industry trend that began in 2020 and shows no signs of slowing down is the idea of creating different outdoor living spaces to suit the different roles our homes now serve.
Working from home is still the norm for many office workers, and companies are even introducing hybrid work models that allow employees more flexibility. These workers want outdoor living spaces that allow them to enjoy some fresh air while also maintaining the privacy and noise control they need to get work done. Think things like latticework, fencing and hedges to give these spaces the right effect.
For entertaining, features like firepits, outdoor seating and dining areas are still popular. Greenery in these spaces is more for an eye-catching look and decoration versus purely functional.
Something that has long been an issue for landscape businesses and continues to be a 2022 landscaping industry trend is labor shortage struggles. However, there are some solutions your business can invest in to get ahead of the competition. Building a solid company culture can help you retain current employees and attract new ones. And investing in the right tools and equipment can help you be more efficient on the job to make the most of your current workforce.
One thing that has only increased over the past few years is the growth of social media for businesses. Landscape businesses have a huge opportunity to market their services on social media, especially to those younger homeowners we talked about earlier who spend a lot of time online. Creating video content to educate potential customers on what you offer can also help you save time while helping your customers get a better idea of what they’re looking for. As more social media sites turn their focus to video, this content is a great tool to show off what your business can do.
Adaptability is key to help your landscape business thrive, so be on the lookout for any new trends that arise next year and think about how you can adjust what you’re doing to meet them.
