Attendees Remotely Operate Cat® Machines at CONEXPO

State of Washington road maintenance crews have dealt with a winter full of danger, clearing snowy roads and doing avalanche control work. Safety is a year-round concern for Department of Transportation workers.  So at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017, Mike Brace, who supervises road maintenance crews for Washington State DOT, got a first-hand look at how the state-of-the-art remote technology of Cat® COMMAND can keep workers safe.

From a comfortable remote operator station in Las Vegas, Brace ran by remote control a Cat® D8T, located 1,400 miles away in Peoria, Illinois.  “You can see it on the screen what I’m actually doing and how it’s moving,” says Brace. “It’s such a pleasure to run, too. It’s effortless.”

“YOU CAN SEE IT ON THE SCREEN WHAT I’M ACTUALLY DOING AND HOW IT’S MOVING. IT’S SUCH A PLEASURE TO RUN, TOO. IT’S EFFORTLESS.”

Cat® COMMAND allows the operator to stay out of harm’s way, using either an over-the-shoulder operator console or a remote operator station offering line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight control.  “The controls are fully integrated into the machines’ systems for quick response and smooth operation,” according to Alan Pumklin, one of the Caterpillar technology experts at CONEXPO.

Operators of smaller Cat machines can also work safely outside the cab with RemoteTask™. Operators can use the remote control system with wireless control up to 1000 feet line-of-sight, while giving up nothing in efficiency and accuracy. “You can position yourself in a location where you can see what you’re doing to make a decision before you make the next move,” says Caterpillar Technology Expert Dante Thomas.

See the Cat® COMMAND and RemoteTask™ technologies for yourself at CONEXPO-CON/AGG in Las Vegas March 7-11.  Visit the D8T Remote Operation Station in the Gold Lot and run a D8 in Peoria live from Las Vegas. Also in the Gold Lot, see the 988K Display with Cat COMMAND for loading.  And at five minutes past every hour, experience the Cat 259D Compact Track Loader with RemoteTask™ demonstration in the Gold Lot.
