NEW STUDY SHOWS CAT® EQUIPMENT LEADS THE WAY AMONG EXCAVATING CONTRACTORS

What have U.S. excavating contractors been buying the last five years? A lot of Cat® equipment—new and used—according to a recent study by Equipment World.

The study looked at equipment financed by 71 contractors between 2010 and November 2014—a total of 5,758 machines. The contractors were divided into three size classes based on annual sales: small (under $5 million), medium ($5-15 million) and large ($16 million and above).

Caterpillar led the way – 37% of the equipment financed was new or used Cat equipment (20 percentage points higher than the nearest competitor).

According to the survey for new equipment, the Cat 336E L Excavator was popular among all three size classes of contractors. Medium-size contractors also financed a significant number of new Cat D6T XL and LGP Dozers. Among large contractors, four of the top five most-financed new models were Cat machines: the 336E L Excavator, D6T XW Dozer, 936D Wheel Loader and 349E L Excavator.

Used Cat equipment was even more popular among excavating contractors. In fact, Cat models held the top five spots for both medium and large contractors, and four of the top five for small contractors. Popular used Cat machines included D6R XL, D6T XL and D8T Dozers; 725, 730 and 740 Articulated Trucks; 140H Motor Grader; 330D L Excavator; and 623G and 627G Scrapers.
