Now more than ever, Caterpillar and Cat® dealer employees must possess the right balance of technical and critical thinking skills to keep up with the rapid changes in processes and technologies.
These technical requirements can lead to multiple career paths, ranging from positions that require a high school education, to certifications, to two- to four-year higher education. The problem? There’s a skills gap, and those who possess the skills required to fill these jobs are very hard to find.
In 2008, Mike Rowe (host of Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs”) launched mikeroweWORKS, an initiative designed to reinvigorate the skilled trades. He’s since written extensively about the United States’ relationship with work, the widening skills gap, offshore manufacturing, infrastructure decline, currency devaluation and several other topics.
In 2013, Mike and Caterpillar worked together to launch PROFOUNDLY DISCONNECTED, a new initiative focused on technical recruitment, as well as the book “Profoundly Disconnected, A True Confession From Mike Rowe.”
Texas Cat Dealer, Holt Cat, has been in partnership with Dubiski Career High School in the Dallas-Fort Worth region for three years and has offered job opportunities to 82 percent of Dubiski School of Transportation-Holt Cat interns for success! Check out a video of Daniel Alvarez, a Dubiski Career High School graduate who now has started his career with the dealership.
