At the start of the 2014 sport-fishing season in February, Captain Josh Temple of Primetime Adventures set out with a clear goal for the season: to break the current previous world record of 422 blue marlins tagged in the Pacific Ocean in a year. Powering Captain Josh and his crew through their record-breaking season has been the Carol Libby, a 60 foot Spencer SpAmerican (hybrid Spencer and American Custom Yachts) vessel equipped with Cat® marine engines and generator sets.
Fishing out of Costa Rica, Panama and Mexico, Captain Josh and his crew have shattered the world record, tagging over 824 blue marlins to date, doubling the existing record as well as setting numerous other records (including most blue marlin tagged in a day - 27, most marlin released in a day - 34 and the most marlin tagged by an angler).
“To break the world record this season, we’ve been fishing non-stop, putting nearly 5,000 hours on the boat since we started. We’re going on expeditions for four to six days, discovering new fisheries in areas previously thought of as just for commercial fishing,” Captain Josh noted. “When you’re offshore in Latin American waters without the safety net of the Coast Guard and fishing as hard as we do, you’re responsible for your own well-being and you need reliability and that’s why I need Cat power.”
Temple continued, “We don’t shut off our engines for three to four days. We run them on continuous duty and they have to perform day-in and day-out, no matter how rough the water gets. I have to worry about a lot of things when I’m 200 miles offshore, but the reliable performance of the Cat power onboard the Carol Libby is never one of them.”
The Carol Libby is powered with two Cat C18 marine propulsion engines rated at 1150 mhp each, as well as a C2.2 generator set. The Cat C18 engine for recreational vessels is electronically-governed, twin- turbocharged and offers after-cooled aspiration. A proven performer in the water since its introduction to the market in 2008, the C18 has become an incredibly popular engine platform due to its rugged durability and is noted in the industry for superior acceleration.
“I’m a fourth generation fisherman and I love everything about Cat power. When I run a boat, there’s one thing I’m adamant about and its Cat power,” Temple noted. “You can’t match the service and support we get from Cat dealers and service technicians.”
