Chinese Shipping Company Turns to MaK™ Asia & Expects to Recoup Overhaul Costs in Just One Month

When they learned that the OSG BEAUTEC was operating sluggishly—the vessel could only travel at 13-14 knots and its engine couldn’t handle more than a 60% load because of high exhaust temperatures—the team at MaK™ Asia stepped in to offer owner Shanghai Anrita Shipping Co. Ltd. a solution.

Parts and Service Support Representative Sun WenHao met face to face with the company and discovered that the OSG BEAUTEC’s 8 M 43 C engine had suffered major component damage—caused by the use of counterfeit parts and an unauthorized workshop for the 30,000-hour overhaul. He proposed a cost-effective service package and invited representatives from Shanghai Anrita Shipping to visit MaK Asia’s new Shanghai workshop for a demonstration of the equipment used to perform an engine overhaul.

“The owner had not done overhaul business with MaK Asia for the last six or seven years,” WenHao says. “They were thoroughly impressed and agreed that their past service choices did not fit the technical requirements of their MaK engine.”

Following the demonstration, Shanghai Anrita Shipping decided to move forward with the overhaul by MaK Asia. All necessary parts were ordered and delivered from Germany to enable MaK Asia to complete the repair work to the customer’s docking schedule. Soon after the OSG BEAUTEC  left port,  the owner texted WenHao to express his satisfaction.

“The engine could now be loaded to 100%, and the vessel was running at an optimum 80% load and a speed of 16-18 knots,” WenHao says. “Thanks to the increase in speed, the owner told us he would get a return on the repair cost within a month by being able to deliver goods more speedily on his China-Korea-Japan route.”

The company has since turned to MaK Asia to perform an overhaul on a second MaK-powered vessel in its fleet, the OSG BOSSTEC, in late November. And now that MaK Asia is an authorized Napier distributor, Shanghai Anrita Shipping has asked the dealer to overhaul the Napier turbochargers on its Wartsila engines as well.
