Combination Compactor Meets Challenge of Asphalt Paving in Utah’s Wasatch Range

Achieving specified asphalt compaction densities when paving on the slopes of the Wasatch Range requires experienced leadership, a highly skilled crew, and the proper equipment.

Working at Red Ledges subdivision in Heber City, Utah, a crew from Staker Parson Companies needed to reach compaction rates in the low 90s. The crew placed a 3-inch thick driving layer on the upscale subdivision’s winding labyrinth of roadways. A total of 2,600 tons of asphalt were laid down.

To help reach the target compaction densities, Staker Parson Companies used a Weiler C110 Combination Compactor. This versatile, vibratory roller combines components of the Cat® CS54 Soil Compactor and the Cat® CB64 Asphalt Compactor.

“We’re paving on hills, up and down, which creates a challenge achieving compaction,” said Doug Howell, paving foreman. “The Weiler C110 Combination Compactor is our breakdown roller, and does most of the compaction.

“The specs require 94, and the C110 is consistently hitting 92. A finish roller compacts the last little bit. The C110 is a very versatile roller. It’s nice to have when you’re against curb and gutter, like this job. The wheels roll right on the edge and tie it into the curb really nice.”

“The C110 is a large enough roller that it can maintain a good pace, but is small enough that we can use it in driveways,” Howell said. “Having the C110 keep up with the paver helps us finish jobs a lot quicker. We’re not waiting for rollers, and trying to achieve density by having to reroll and reroll. The sooner we can hit our density targets and be done, the sooner we can move on to another job.” The machine’s efficiency also helps Howell keep expenses down.

Staker Parson Companies completes a wide range of asphalt paving jobs. “We do everything from highways that are millions of dollars to driveways that are thousands of dollars,” Howell said.

Tracy Townsend, who has operated screeds, pavers and rollers in her 20 years at Staker Parson Companies, worked the Weiler C110 Combination Compactor at Red Ledges. “I like the roller,” Townsend said. “In particular, the visibility is very good. It thumps pretty hard, so I hit the densities.” She also liked the machine’s versatility. “We use it for everything – driveways, highways, pretty much any asphalt paving job.”

Weiler integrates the back end of the Cat CS54 Soil Compactor, the tank and drum from the Cat CB64 Asphalt Compactor, and a variety of Cat components to create a unique product. Caterpillar OEM Solutions provides the Cat portions, which are covered by Caterpillar warranty and serviceable at Cat dealerships.
