Soil compaction is tricky. And it needs to be right. For decades, most operators made sure the soil they were compacting was properly packed by making extra passes over it — just to be sure.
But extra, unnecessary passes mean extra fuel burned and wasted time. There’s a better way with Cat® Compaction Control.
Estimated read time: 2 minutes
Machine Drive Power (MDP) is the measuring feature of Cat® Compaction Control. It measures soil stiffness and tells you when the soil is properly compacted, so that you can move on to your next section. This saves you time and money wasted making additional, unnecessary passes. And MDP works for all soil types, including granular, semi-cohesive and cohesive.
Estimated watch time: 3 minutes
Using MDP on your compaction jobs is easy [01:13]:
Simply roll a lift until the MDP value on your Compaction Control monitor changes fewer than three digits each additional pass.
Or you can just roll an area that has already met compaction targets.
Note the MDP value displayed on the screen.
Next, use that MDP value as your compaction target.
Then, make passes as needed and at a consistent speed until the MDP slider on your other monitor is in the acceptable zone.
MDP is even more powerful when paired with Cat Compaction Control with GPS mapping. This system gives you a bird’s eye view of your compaction job, with real-time compaction maps on your Compaction Control monitor. Sections of the map change color as you work, giving you a snapshot of how the job is going.
Even better, Cat GPS mapping highlights trouble spots in the soil, so you can make sure your work is uniform. In-cab GPS mapping controls on your display screen let you easily change map views, zoom in and out on trouble spots, and allow easy mapping and recording of your work.
