OPERATING TIPS FOR CAT® EXCAVATOR MONITOR

Caterpillar offers several easy-to-activate, quick-start features on your Next Gen excavator to simplify your daily work. Assign individual operator IDs and secure access to your excavator with a passcode, Bluetooth key or smartphone app. And it’s simple to set up your monitor to recognize your attachments using the Cat® PL161 Attachment Locator.

Let’s go over a few operating tips to make these two features work for you.

SETTING UP OPERATOR IDS

Master privileges are required if you want to add or change operator IDs and permissions. A master user is indicated with a letter M to the left of the username on your monitor.

Using a master username, it’s easy to set up a new operator ID:

  1. On your monitor, go to the setting menu and select Operator Setting, then select Manage Operator.

  2. By pressing Add Operator, you will be prompted to select the type of identification that will be used — either passcode or Bluetooth key/phone.

  3. Select the level of privileges you want to assign to the operator and enter the operator’s name.

  4. To edit or delete an operator profile, simply go to the Manage Operator screen and click the operator ID you wish to delete or modify.

You can access your operator ID using a passcode, a Bluetooth key or a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone with the Cat app. Let’s look at how to set those up:

  • SETTING UP PASSCODE ACCESS FOR OPERATOR IDS

If you are setting an operator ID with passcode access, you will enter the operator’s passcode, a four- to seven-digit number, and press apply to finalize.

  • SETTING UP BLUETOOTH KEY ACCESS FOR OPERATOR IDS

If you are setting an operator ID with a Bluetooth key access, you will be prompted to input the MAC ID key code (which can be found printed on the box in which your key came or on the back of the key itself). Select Change Operator and click Detect Bluetooth Key/Phone. It will take a few moments to pair the Bluetooth key with the machine; once it is paired, the machine will automatically recognize the Bluetooth key and start.

  • SETTING UP SMARTPHONE APP ACCESS FOR OPERATOR IDS

The smartphone app works similarly to the Bluetooth key. Make sure the Cat app is installed on your smartphone (available in iOS and Android).

First-time users will need to register with Caterpillar; existing users should sign in with their CWS ID and password. Now, with your app ready, go through the process of adding a new operator ID on your excavator monitor, selecting Bluetooth key as your type of identification. Once you have added the operator ID, go back to your app, enter User Preferences and find your MDID code. Enter this code into your excavator monitor. Select Change Operator and click Detect Bluetooth Key/Phone. On your app, click Scan and Add Equipment. After the machine pairs with the app, the machine will automatically recognize the operator and start when the phone is close to the machine (though the smartphone’s Bluetooth must be enabled).

ATTACHMENT RECOGNITION FOR CAT® EXCAVATORS

The Cat PL161 Attachment Locator is a Bluetooth tracking system that mounts to your attachments. These modules can be used to track attachments across multiple worksites and measure the number of working hours per attachment to help predict the need for tool maintenance.

The PL161 is durable and designed to be installed on tools exposed to harsh work environments, with a battery powered for up to two years to minimize maintenance. And it’s easy to connect your PL161 modules to your monitor. This is how it works:

  1. The PL161 sends a Bluetooth signal to your excavator. To discover the Bluetooth signal, shake the attachment, which activates the data transmission and makes sure attachment settings are correct.

  2. Check your monitor to confirm that you are picking up the transmission of the correct attachment.

  3. You can monitor multiple attachments with PL161 modules using your smartphone. Your Cat app will scan for PL161 modules within range, using the Bluetooth technology on your smartphone or tablet.
