Cat® UTV features and benefits

First, it’s important to understand that not every UTV is purpose-built for work. Many serve more recreational purposes and may not have the features and capabilities you need to accomplish tasks on the farm or ranch. That said, let’s take a look at some important considerations for a work-centric utility vehicle:

  • Load hauling capabilities – UTVs are often used to haul substantial loads on the farm, such as 1,000 lb. spray rigs or heavy bags of feed. Therefore, you want to select a utility vehicle with enough rear cargo and/or towing capacity to handle the tasks at hand. Additionally, it’s a good idea to consider the cargo bed material. A side-by-side with an all-steel cargo bed is going to be much more durable and customizable than a plastic bed.
  • Stability – Ranch and farm terrain can vary greatly, especially depending on your operation’s location. It’s important to pick a UTV with a suspension system that provides stable and smooth transport on any terrain, whether you’re hauling a full load or not.
  • Ease of maintenance – As we all know, downtime is the enemy on the farm or ranch. So when it comes time to service your equipment, it needs to be quick and simple. Some UTVs on the market today were purposely designed with this in mind—providing easy access to service points so you can perform necessary maintenance even when you’re out in the field.

Cat UTV - Daily Operations

In addition to workhorse capabilities, there are several other things to consider about a UTV that can enhance your comfort, safety and efficiency during daily operations. To help you with this, we’ve compiled a checklist to help guide your decision and/or discuss with your UTV dealer.

The Cab:

  • Is there ample head, shoulder and leg room for you and your passenger(s)?
  • Is the driver seat and/or steering column adjustable?
  • Does the UTV manufacturer and/or dealer offer both two-seat and five-seat models?
  • Does the cab offer plenty of storage space for personal items, clipboards, beverages, work files, etc.?
  • Is it easy to get in and out of the cab?

The Engine:

  • Does it have low noise and vibration levels while operating?
  • Does the UTV manufacturer and/or dealer offer both gas- and diesel-powered models?
  • What are the maximum speeds?
  • Are you able to set speed restrictions for operational safety reasons?

Service and Support:

  • Does the UTV come backed by dealer support?
  • Are parts and/or accessories easily available?
  • Does the UTV manufacturer and/or dealer offer other equipment that you may need for your business?

A UTV can be a great addition to your farm or ranch. They’re less expensive, easier to maneuver and can come in handy more often than you think.
