C12.9

Need a boost? Meet your supercharged, turbocharged solution

Get a closer look at the Cat® C12.9 high performance engine as Hashim Marzuq from Caterpillar Marine Group discusses key features and benefits in this walkaround. The C12.9 marine propulsion engine is ideal for high performance marine applications including yachts, fishing vessels, military vessels, governmental vessels and various other high performance marine applications. The electronically-controlled C12.9 is offered in two power ratings: 850 mhp at 2300 rpm and 1000 mhp at 2300 rpm. Both ratings meet EPA Tier 3, IMO II, EU Recreational Craft Directive and EU Stage IIIA regulations.

“The 1000 mph engine has a supercharger which enhances the low end available torque to you at lower engine rpm. It is electronically controlled, starting from 600 to 900 rpm,” Marzuq notes. This allows fast acceleration throughout the entire engine speed range due to its air system design of integrated series turbochargers and a supercharger. Other features of the engine include a common rail fuel system and dual aftercoolers, which are split into a low pressure and high pressure aftercooler. Both aftercoolers are freshwater-cooled. “The C12.9 is what we consider a separate circuit aftercooled engine. It uses one common coolant that is separated via dual thermostats and the pressure reduction through the plumbing in the system.”
