If you think all fuel filters are the same, recent testing proves that’s not the case — not by a long shot. In fact, when five equivalent fuel filter brands went through the same real-world test, only one reached the end before fuel injector failure: the Cat® Advanced High Efficiency Fuel Filter. Take a closer look at the test and what it means for your bottom line.
Highly contaminated fuel was circulated through an engine fuel system test rig at rated and high idle to stimulate an extremely harsh operating environment. Two filters for each brand — Baldwin, Cat, Donaldson, Fleetguard and Wix — were tested and the results averaged to determine performance.
The Baldwin, Donaldson, Fleetguard and Wix filters formed significant leak paths as a result of erosion and contamination. Injectors with these filters all failed prior to the end of the test. Fuel injectors with Cat Advanced High Efficiency Fuel Filters experienced the least amount of wear — lasting anywhere from 45% to 80% longer.
Clean fuel has a big effect on component life, engine performance and your overall costs. All fuel filters remove SOME abrasive particles, but this testing shows that only Cat Advanced High Efficiency Fuel Filters capture and retain the particles MOST damaging to your fuel system.
When you choose another filter instead of a Cat Advanced High Efficiency Fuel Filter, you may save on the purchase price, but you may pay much more down the road due to early-hour injector failure — as much as 80% to 400% more. With Cat filters, longer fuel injector life means better engine performance, lower repair costs and less downtime for you.
