Learn about the ways the Cat 995 Wheel Loader can help your site reduce greenhouse gas emissions by moving more material while burning less fuel
By Caterpillar | May 23, 2024
As the world transitions toward a lower-carbon future, Caterpillar supports our customers’ efforts to mitigate climate change by providing products that help lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improve efficiency and productivity, and reduce waste.
Take the new Cat® 995 Wheel Loader, for example. While it’s the same size as its predecessor, the 994K, it offers a higher rated payload — which means it can load more in fewer passes, burning less fuel in the process. It also offers advanced technologies that improve efficiency, which also reduces fuel usage.
The 995 offers up to a one-pass reduction when loading Cat 785, 789 and 793 Mining Trucks — increasing production and efficiency up to 33% when loading the 785, up to 25% when loading the 789, and up to 20% with the 793.
When loading a 793 in testing, the 995 demonstrated 21% higher efficiency and 24% more production than the 994K in equal operating mode thanks to its higher rated payload and a 6% increase in hydraulic force. These improvements were achieved without the use of the new technology features below, which allow additional efficiency gains.
995 systems work hard to save fuel while boosting productivity through advanced technologies.
Enhanced Economy Mode is ideal for those operations that are highly concerned with efficiency and desire the lowest possible hourly fuel consumption. The 995 in Enhanced Eco Mode delivers up to 8% greater efficiency and up to 13% reduction in fuel per hour versus Horsepower Plus Mode. It has demonstrated a 30% increase in efficiency and an 11% reduction in hourly fuel consumption versus the 994K in throttle lock mode, which translates to 23% less CO2 per unit of material moved.
On-Demand Throttle is a feature that delivers up to 5% improved efficiency and up to 8% reduction in fuel per hour when compared to Horsepower Plus Mode. Utilizing the on-demand throttle, operators maintain normal operation with the left pedal and implements while the 995 manages the engine speed.
Engine Idle Shutdown saves fuel by making it possible to avoid unnecessary idling. When the wheel loader is not being utilized for a pre-selected length of time, the machine will automatically shut down.
The 995’s Cat 3516E Engine meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final standards, which require the reduction of two primary exhaust pollutants: particulate matter (PM) and nitrous oxide (NOx).
Features like Cat anti-drain filter housings and component ecology drains enable better control of fluids, decreasing the amount of waste contributed to the environment.
In addition, the Cat Reman program preserves raw materials, conserve energy and reduces emissions by returning end-of-life components to like-new condition. Reman has been shown to contribute to 65-87% less GHG process emissions, and uses 80-90% less new materials (by weight) and 65-87% less process energy when compared to manufacturing new engines and components.
Similarly, Cat Certified Rebuild programs increase the lifespan of equipment by providing customers with product updates at a fraction of the cost of buying a new machine, enabling us to extend the life of materials.
Caterpillar and Cat dealers also offer retrofits and upgrades for older machines to incorporate efficiency improvements and emission reductions, and to keep them in production longer to conserve energy and minimize the need for raw materials.
