Caterpillar and AI: Three Ways Smart Technology Makes Work Easier

Artificial intelligence is simplifying many aspects of our daily lives. Here’s how Caterpillar AI can do the same for owning and operating equipment.

Smart technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are everywhere. Need proof?

When you’re ready to tune in to your favorite podcast, your voice assistant turns it on right where you left off. If you want to wake up in a warm room, your smart thermostat learns your sleep patterns and adjusts the temperature. And if you’re looking for a new series to binge, your streaming service recommends the best options based on your viewing history.

There’s no denying AI can make your personal life simpler and more convenient in lots of different ways. Good news: The same is true for your work life, too.

Ogi Redzic, Caterpillar’s chief digital officer and senior vice president, sat down with NYSE Floor Talk to explain three ways the “digital DNA” built into Cat® equipment can simplify your owning and operating experience. Read on for the highlights from that interview.

1. Connectivity drives efficiency on the job

“It all starts with connectivity,” Redzic says, and he’s right. With 1.4 million connected Caterpillar assets — machines and power systems — in the field, there’s a lot of data being generated every day. What happens to all that information?

“It comes to a centralized location, where we process the data and create machine learning and AI algorithms that help us extract value,” Redzic says. “Then we present that to our customers through different applications.”

One of those applications — VisionLinkOpens in a New Tab™ — helps you keep track of all your equipment, no matter what the brand. By turning your data into easy-to-understand insights, VisionLink lets you monitor where equipment is working, how much fuel it’s using, if it needs service and more.

2. Condition monitoring catches potential problems

There’s another advantage to collecting and analyzing all that data: It allows your Cat dealer to monitor the condition of your equipment, detect possible issues and alert you to take action before failure.

Imagine you’re working for a dealership and you want to make sure that your customers’ equipment is operating as much as possible. These tools are helping our dealers get ahead of failures and turn them into scheduled maintenance.

Data from more than 20 different sources — everything from equipment sensors to inspections to fluid analysis — goes into condition monitoringOpens in a New Tab. That gives Cat dealers an accurate picture of performance and health, so they can recommend exactly what parts and services you need (and when) to keep your equipment on the job.

3. E-commerce speeds up parts buying

Speaking of parts, they’re one of the most tangible examples of Caterpillar AI in action. Data and smart technology feed our e-commerce tools like Parts.Cat.Com (PCC), making it easier to find and buy the right parts for your equipment. The AI uses data collected from connected assets all over the world combined with parts purchase data to offer predictive parts suggestions, based on individual machine usage. Customers can see these tailored, serial number specific suggestions when they log into PCC.

Since we’re on the topic of fast, easy parts purchases, it’s worth mentioning the Cat Central app While it’s not AI, the new QR code feature in Cat Central really streamlines the purchase process for busy customers who need parts on the go.

Redzic gives the example of a small landscaping contractor who doesn’t have time to visit his Cat dealer for parts or services. So when his skid steer loader needs maintenance, this landscaper pulls up the Cat Central app and uses it to scan the machine’s unique QR code.  The app will show him parts specific to his machine, making it easier to find what he needs.

“Caterpillar offers 1.5 million parts, but he only needs a couple of parts,” Redzic says. “So we actually reduce the world of parts he can buy to the world of parts that fit his asset. The experience of buying becomes very seamless, very easy, very transparent. And he can do it straight from his mobile phone.”
