For Cat® Precision cutting edges, you’ll want to keep an eye on the built-in repair indicators so that you can flip or replace them before they start to impact productivity.
We show this maintenance on a Cat D6 XE Dozer, but the process is similar on all Cat dozers. Check out your Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM) for specific instructions and information about what personal protective equipment (PPE) to have on hand when maintaining your machine’s Cat Precision cutting edges. Watch this video or read the written instructions below to get the details:
Before you begin, move your equipment to a level surface and lower your blade onto blocks to support the weight of the edges. You’ll also need to lock out the hydraulics and turn off the engine.
Your Cat Precision cutting edges are designed with up to 20% more wear material than standard cutting edges. When you keep an eye on wear, you’re able to know when it’s time to flip your cutting edges. To make this process easy, check the built-in wear indicators each day and avoid costly blade repairs.
If you need any hardware or new GET components to complete this service, order what you need on Parts.Cat.com.
And when it’s time for you to install a new cutting edge, here are some guidelines to keep in mind:
When you install new cutting edge components, always use new bolts and nuts.
There are two potential options for installation. Start at the center of the blade and work toward the ends or install from one end to the other.
As you install, make sure you strike the bolt heads with a hammer.
To finish your installation, check that the bolts are tightened to their proper requirements. Check your OMM to find the values for your equipment.
It’s no surprise that daily maintenance and jobsite condition impact your blade’s condition. Here are some suggestions for keeping your Cat Precision cutting edges working well:
Make sure you select the ground engaging tool (GET) that is correct for your working conditions. Specifically, high-impact conditions can shorten your blade’s service life.
Keep your hardware at proper torque values. You’ll see the values for your equipment listed in your OMM.
Avoid applying lubricant to your cutting edge.
Check that all surfaces of the GET are free of dirt, debris and rust.
