Cat® G3600 Engine Continues to Evolve to Meet Operators’ Needs

Next-Generation Engine Satisfies Midstream Priorities

By Danielle Foelber | Posted December, 2023

Introduced in 1991, the G3600 series set a new standard for gas compression operations. We’ve continued to introduce new generations of the product line as operator needs and industry demands evolve, maintaining the reliability and uptime operators have come to rely on.

With today’s requirements in mind, the next generation G3600 A4 Gen 2 engine is designed for increased power, fuel flexibility and durability, which can yield a higher compressor flow running at full load compared to the previous model. As a lean burn engine, the G3600 A4 Gen 2 generates lower exhaust gas temperatures, which results in greater longevity and allows the engine to accept high BTU gas without compromising power.

The field-validated Cat® G3600 A4 Gen 2 engine offers a 10% power increase and the ability to run consistently at full load, meaning fewer engines may be needed to do the same work as the previous engine model. This possibility can translate to lower capital requirements, reduced operating expenses and decreased fuel consumption. Fewer engines operating in the field may also contribute to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which is a key goal for operators. Caterpillar has conducted extensive lab testing, simulating operator site conditions. The G3600 A4 Gen 2 field validation engines have successfully accumulated more than 80,000 hours of extensive lab testing, simulating operator conditions across all four-cylinder counts. Compared to the previous model, the following results are possible with the G3600 A4 Gen 2: reduced VOC by more than 32%, CH4 by more than 33%, GHG by more than 5%, HCHO by more than 24% and CO by more than 13%.

The G3600 legacy of durability and longevity continues with the Cat G3600 A4 Gen 2. This field-proven engine allows the same service intervals as the previous model, as well as dependable parts availability. It specifies a major overhaul at 100,000 hours and allows multiple overhaul cycles, giving operators confidence in the engine's long-term durability. With the Cat Dealer network providing reliable aftermarket support to more than 190 countries, the Cat G3600 A4 Gen 2 is easy to own, operate and maintain.
