Before you get started on this service, make sure someone else is nearby to help you with this process. And as always, your OMM provides more information about safety procedures and what personal protective equipment (PPE) you need to complete this service.

Testing Brake Hold

Once your machine is parked on a level area, start the engine and run it at a low idle. This will charge your service brake accumulators. After two minutes, you’ll see the RPMs drop and an indicator light. This means the brake accumulators are fully charged.

Next, start the engine and raise your implement slightly. Apply the service brake and release the parking brake. You will need to check that your transmission is in manual mode, and then shift to gear 2F.

Gradually increase to a high idle and make sure your equipment does not move. After testing the brake, shift to a low idle and then into neutral. If your equipment moves while you’re testing the brake, reduce the engine speed and engage the parking brake.

Checking Service Brake Wear

You can now shut down your engine, exit the cab and begin checking the service brake.

  1. Make sure you have another operator nearby for this maintenance. Ask the other person to get in the cab and depress the service brake. Meanwhile, you’ll check the service brake under the machine.

  2. Remove the service brake indicator cap. You can find the location of this cap in your OMM.

  3. Next, push the wear indicator pin until it reaches the brake piston.

  4. Check to see if you can still see the indicator or its tip. If so, you have sufficient brake life.

  5. Finally, put the cap back on and resume work.
