A commitment to innovation permeates Caterpillar Oil & Gas’ culture, which propels engineering excellence that empowers oilfield companies to achieve peak performance. Learn how engineering manager Shaun Fogle supports companies’ successes across the industry.
A: I’ve always been interested in how things work and how they’re designed, especially engines and mechanical components. I earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Akron and spent the past couple of decades focused on engine design.
A: After college, I moved from Ohio to Peoria, Illinois to join Caterpillar as a design engineer working on engine components for diesel marine applications. That came at a pivotal time as Tier 4 diesel engine standards were adopted and implemented, which spurred multiple innovations.
I have been working on oil and gas projects since 2012. My experience has helped find ways for gas engines to deliver comparable performance to diesel through features like engine controls. I’ve focused my time and attention on the Cat® G3600 engine for the past five years. This engine helps gas compression operators both optimize engine performance and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
A: I’m an engineering manager overseeing engine platform levels, and I manage a team of nine people. My role is somewhat similar to how a general foreman in construction oversees a variety of trades. I collaborate with many design teams such as the piston team, harness team, block team and more by providing key customer requirements and translating them into component success criteria. My day-to-day involves helping identify new technologies, designing, validating and ensuring they can meet market needs and the high expectations set by Caterpillar’s rigorous standards.
A: My team and I work on combustion improvements and aftertreatment solutions to help reduce emissions like methane, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx). For example, in developing the G3600 A4 Gen 2, we specifically engineered it to be available in multiple configurations to satisfy various operating conditions while reducing emissions compared to the Gen 1.
A: I’m motivated by developing and producing high-performance solutions. Right now, we’re focused on increasing power while reducing GHG emissions. It’s challenging and exciting work – and meaningful too, because it supports customers through the energy transition.
A: We’re fortunate to work with many gas compression operators that are early adopters of new technology. We work closely with those companies to continuously refine and enhance those solutions.
A: The investments we’ve made in R&D and technology provide a range of benefits, and we proactively develop adaptable solutions and technologies while also helping decrease engine GHG emissions.
A: I really appreciate the complexity involved in working on engines and the ability to address challenges from a design standpoint. It’s rewarding to see our engines powering the world’s energy needs and helping companies succeed. I get to come to work every day and look for ways to modify our engines to improve emissions and increase engine power. My role gives me opportunities to change engine components and evaluate the complex tradeoffs between performance, cost, and risk.
A: Guidelines for reducing GHG emissions will continue to evolve, and we aim to stay engaged with our customers to understand their needs throughout the energy transition. We build on currently available solutions by developing contingency designs and enhancements that can adapt to changing requirements.
A: I try to keep an active lifestyle, and I’m a sports enthusiast. I grew up skiing, and I play basketball in the Cat League. I also participate in races like Tough Mudder and the charity mud run for the Wounded Warrior Project with a group that consists of my brothers and friends, which creates fun competition among us. I also love attending rock concerts and vacationing on sunny beaches.
