Your Engine’s Journey Through Cat® Reman
For years, your equipment’s engine has reliably powered you through job after job after job. And now, that engine is finally approaching the end of its lifecycle — but that doesn’t mean its usability has to be over. That’s where Cat® Reman comes in.

But what is Cat Reman’s intensive remanufacturing process? When you buy a Cat Reman engine and in exchange provide a used engine to your Cat dealer, what steps do we take to prepare it for reuse? Let’s look behind the scenes at how an old core — i.e., equipment part — goes from end of life to second (or third or fourth) life.
WHERE REMANUFACTURING BEGINS
When you buy Cat Reman and return your engine to your Cat dealer, they perform a preliminary inspection. You’ll get a core refund, depending on certain criteria3. Then, your dealer sends the used engine to Cat Reman.
At any Cat Reman facility, the first steps are inspection and disassembly. When we receive your engine, we thoroughly inspect it to determine its condition.
The core is taken apart piece by piece and then sorted so it can go to the appropriate specialized team. The team inspects the parts to identify any wear or damage that wasn’t visible during the initial inspection. Depending on the level of wear, that part may be replaced or remanufactured.
Components that can be brought back to original performance specification are next sent to our specialized cleaning process. We thoroughly clean off any dirt, oil or other contaminants, which helps us see exactly what work is called for. If needed, it will go through our intensive salvaging process. Our advanced salvaging techniques include laser cladding, welding and machining.
CLEANED AND MACHINED TO LIKE NEW STANDARDS
Once everything has been cleaned and machined, the various components are meticulously put back together. To maintain that level of quality you expect from Caterpillar, some items — such as bearings, piston rings, gaskets and bolts — are always replaced with new. After assembly, we run the engine through Cat Reman’s thorough testing process to ensure all parts are working to our like new performance standards. And when the engine has met all of Cat Reman’s quality standards, it gets repainted, packaged and shipped out to find its next home.
So if your engine is nearing the end of its days, now you know how Cat Reman brings it back to those like new specifications. And with the core refund you receive from your Cat dealer when you return your core3, your Cat Reman engine is a fraction of the cost of new.
