Inspecting your Cat® linkage pins and joints is an important part of your daily maintenance. Greasing your pins is also necessary to make sure your machine components move smoothly. Read on to learn how you can complete this planned maintenance yourself.
If you need any grease or tools to complete this maintenance, order in advance from Parts.Cat.com. And if you would like detailed instructions, parts and tooling to inspect your Cat linkage pins, check out Self-Service Options (SSO).
To get started servicing your Cat linkage pins, watch this video and read the instructions below:
Before starting your daily checks, make sure your machine is moved to a dry and level surface. Also lower your implements, lock out the hydraulics and turn off your engine. You can find more information in your Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM).
To start your daily check on your Cat linkage pins, look for damage to your bolts, washers, plates and grease fittings. Then complete the following:
Check for leaks, rust or grease buildup around your joints and linkage pins.
If you notice any missing parts, replace them immediately.
For machines equipped with autolube, make sure the lines are not damaged.
Your linkage pin inspection should also continue during machine operation. Listen for unusual sounds such as squeaky joints. This could mean the joints need to be greased.
Greasing regularly allows your equipment to move smoothly and purges contaminants from the joint.
Grab your grease gun and shop towel to clean off the fittings. Cat Prime Application Grease is often the best product but consult with your Cat dealer if you work in severe applications. Pump in grease until it begins to emerge from the pin joint.
Check over your OMM for the greasing locations and intervals for your machine. You will find a helpful decal on your equipment that shows greasing locations, too. Contact your Cat dealer for additional support.
