The Wiess Energy Hall at the Houston Museum of Natural Science offers an immersive, chronological journey through the history of energy, spanning from the Big Bang to future technologies. Originally focused on oil and gas, the exhibit expanded several years ago to encompass diverse types of energy. By providing a comprehensive understanding of energy processes—from upstream to downstream—the exhibit plays a pivotal role in educating anyone interested in the energy industry.
According to the museum, the Wiess Energy Hall is the most technologically advanced exhibition on the science and technology of energy anywhere in the world. It serves as a comprehensive resource, allowing visitors to explore and experience various energy sources through a number of interactive exhibits.
This includes the Eagle Ford Shale Experience, a.k.a. “the EFX 3000,” where visitors experience the drilling process firsthand. The “Energy Jukebox” draws inspiration from “Schoolhouse Rock!” by creatively integrating engaging music into educational content. Collaborations with rock musicians have resulted in memorable songs that align seamlessly with the exhibit's educational objectives.
Through the support and collaboration of various energy companies, Wiess Energy Hall serves as a comprehensive education tool for students, energy sector professionals and the community. Interactive events, summer camps, immersive learning experiences and curriculum are available to schools, homeschool groups and various organizations.
It also serves as a training platform for energy companies. Interns from collaborating companies have the opportunity to explore energy-related fields through the exhibit.
The museum is committed to keeping the exhibit and its online resources up-to-date with industry changes and emerging trends by updating its displays every five years. Online resources, teaching tools and exhibit animations are available online, where anyone across the globe can access them.
With an innovative combination of interactive exhibits and technology, the Wiess Energy Hall offers visitors an in-depth journey into the energy industry, both showcasing Houston's energy hub status and standing as a testament to the power of education and industry collaboration.
