Leveraging Hybrid Technologies to Reduce Fuel Costs and Increase efficiency

The Benefits are in the Numbers

Operators and drilling companies continue to focus on reducing fuel costs and increasing operating efficiency while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Cat® Hybrid Energy Storage Solution helps address these needs as it enables companies to reduce diesel use and related emissions. It easily configures into current rig setups, giving operators and drillers more flexibility when selecting fuel types. It also ensures transient power is available when needed, allowing companies to confidently utilize diesel alternatives without compromising performance. When used with a gas genset, the Hybrid Energy Storage Solution produces a transient response that’s faster than traditional diesel-only systems.

Advanced Technology Suite

The Hybrid Energy Storage Solution includes the latest in genset controls and a suite of technologies that are engineered to provide a lower-emission solution and dependable power:

  • Cat Power Grid Stabilization Module (PGS): The PGS is a scalable, quick-deploy energy storage system with a heavy-duty battery structure that protects against power failures, voltage sags/surges, and under/over frequency conditions. It works with an array of renewable energy sources, including solar, to provide short duration power when the renewable source is not available or virtual spinning reserve to optimize genset efficiency. It provides crucial transient assist and grid stabilization for reliable performance.
  • Cat Bidirectional Power Inverters (BDP): Compatible with virtually any power source, the BDP provides operators and drillers complete control over the charge and discharge of the hybrid solution. The BDP can be used with traditional battery systems, lithium-ion batteries, and ultra-capacitors to increase the range of storage options available in the field.
  • Cat Microgrid Master Controllers (MMC) - The MMC integrates a variety of traditional and renewable energy sources to provide overall asset monitoring and control, whether those assets are located on the same site or over a wider region.

Each component of the suite works together to enable companies to reduce fuel costs – and emissions – by running rigs on natural or field gas. For example, pairing the Hybrid Energy Storage Solution with a Cat G3512 engine is proven to deliver up to 30% fuel cost savings with compressed natural gas, 85% fuel cost savings with field gas, and up to 80% reduction in NOx depending upon site configuration. CO2e reductions of up to 11% and 7% are possible with natural gas and field gas, respectively.*

The Hybrid Energy Storage Solution provides operators and drillers a dependable solution to help reduce fuel consumption and emissions without sacrificing performance. It can be an important element to help companies achieve greater operational efficiency while helping attain their unique sustainability goals.
