Succeed With Expertise: Miami Lakes Learning Center Equips Technicians to Master Daily Oilfield Demands

Expert-Led Learning Solutions Empower Technicians in Well Service and Gas Compression

Oil and gas companies seeking to enhance their technicians’ knowledge and skills often contact the Miami Lakes Learning Center (MLLC). The center empowers technicians to expand their capabilities through Caterpillar Oil & Gas’ industry-recognized learning and development modules.

These industry-leading trainings are beneficial for both oilfield veterans and those just starting their careers, and support a variety of roles including operators, shop techs, field techs, reliability engineers and more. Not only do the training modules enable companies to upskill workers but also help maximize the results achieved with Cat® equipment.

The Leader in Well Service and Gas Compression Education

The MLLC has earned a reputation as an authority for well service and gas compression trainings across several focus areas, including operations and maintenance, overhauls, electronics and systems performance and troubleshooting. The MLLC also provides training for certified commissioning of the Cat G3600 gas compression engine. Technicians learn proper techniques and protocols to troubleshoot issues that can occur in the field and more effectively calibrate engines as a result of the expert-led instruction. Some well service companies have reported they’ve increased their fuel blending percentage from 50% to 80% as a result of their workers completing the training.

Learning modules typically involve 40% classroom instruction combined with 60% hands-on training. Some training sessions are 100% lab-based, where learners are immersed in real-life scenarios for troubleshooting purposes. For example, a well service operator might experience gas blending challenges with a dual-fuel engine. The MLLC’s curriculum can equip a technician to maximize gas blending performance with hands-on access to a Cat Dynamic Gas Blending™ engine. For gas compression operations, technicians learn how to achieve emissions targets while maximizing uptime and throughput.

The MLLC has invested substantial resources to ensure that program participants can learn on operational, state-of-the-art equipment to provide an authentic oilfield experience. The MLLC is the only facility equipped with all Cat gas compression engines, a 3512E Tier 4 engine coupled to a TH55 transmission, and a G3606 A4 coupled to a single-stage compressor. These units are used to simulate authentic site conditions as closely as possible. Participants can train on actual running engines or gas compressors, which isn’t possible in the field as it would risk causing downtime on-site. Gaining hands-on experience makes all the difference when a technician applies their learnings on the job site.

Trainers have returned to the MLLC to continuously uplevel their skill sets and keep pace with the industry's requirements.

“Our facility is a primary destination for technicians seeking to advance their knowledge and learn new approaches to satisfy operational goals or prevent issues,” said Ceballos.

The MLLC’s training modules produce valuable results, including increased profitability and productivity stemming from efficiency gains as well as reduced non-productive time (NPT). Total cost of ownership (TCO) can be lowered also as a result of proper maintenance techniques.

Ceballos and the MLLC instructors ensure the availability of a wide range of flexible training options that can meet every trainee’s needs. From self-guided e-learning, virtual instructor-led courses and in-person training, all MLLC curriculum is routinely updated to reflect the latest technologies and innovative techniques.
